Reached by daily flights from Bandberg, Hervey Bay, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost coral cay of the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef. Just 100 acres in size, the island is home to a small eco resort and an airstrip, and with around 1,200 species of marine life and unspoilt coral reef, some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. What’s not to like?
Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is small and unpretentious, with just 41 simple but comfortable rooms, all with ceiling fans, but in keeping with the island’s sustainable tourism policies, refreshingly lacking in modern amenities such as telephones, television, radios. Here you really can switch off, wind down and just enjoy the natural scenery and environment. There are four types of room, the Two Bedroom Island Suites, which sleep four people and have a separate living room, with a mini friedge, tea and coffee-making facilities, and microwave, as well as a private balcony with views over Sunrise Beach. Reef and Garden Units sleep two or four people, feature polished wooden floors and ensuite bathrooms, and are between 10 and 30 metres’ walk to the beach. For the full-on native experience, go for an Eco Cabin, safari-style tents sleeping four people in two bunk beds, shared bathroom facilities and freestanding fans.
As you might expect with some of the world’s finest diving and snorkelling, activities around Lady Elliot resort are based on the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, althought here is a beach volleyball court, a pool table and an Activities Office where you can borrow board and card games, reference books, binoculars, and a range of children’s toys. There is a saltwater swimming pool, and as well as PADI diving and snorkelling, there are reef-walking trips, glass-bottomed boat trips by day and night, fish feeding trips, birdwatching, day trips to other nearby islands, island discovery tours, and a historical tour as well as walking trips. For the younger guests there is a childen’s playground and Junior Reef Rangers club to keep them occupied, as well as a babysitting service. If you’re considering tying the knot, and quite frankly it’s got to be one of the most romantic locations to get married, there’s a full wedding planning service available.
The Beachfront Dining Room is the only restaurant on Lady Elliot Island, and serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner with stunning views over the ocean. the Beachfront Café also serves a good selection of salads, burgers, coffee and the Lagoon Bar is a great spot to enjoy a nice cold beer or a bottle of good Aussie wine.
