This comprehensive tour of Sri Lanka takes in so many of the country's historic and natural highlights as well as giving you time to relax at a luxurious beach resort. Beginning in the colourful hill capital of Kandy, with its beautiful royal botanical gardens and famous Temple of the Tooth, you travel to Habarana stopping at the Dambulla cave temples and the Matale Spice Garden and at Sigiriya, where you find the stunning Lion Rock fortress. Then enjoy a relaxing beach break before ending the tour in the capital city Colombo.

Day 1
Kandy

Your wonderful tour around Sri Lanka begins in the hill capital of Kandy, stronghold of the Sinhala kings and one of the most beautiful cities in the country where the focal point is the golden roofed Dalada Maligawa. There are lots of shrines and temples in Kandy where you can see rare paintings, frescoes and wood and stone carvings. After checking in to your hotel, the rest of the day and evening is free for you to go out and explore on your own.

Day 2
Kandy

Today after breakfast you are taken to the Royal Botanical Gardens which are four miles outside the city centre. These gorgeous gardens were first planted and laid out in the 1700s and cover some 150 acres of trees lawns and flowering shrubs. Under British rule, the royal park became a botanical garden in 1821. In the centre of the gardens is an artificial lake in the shape of the island of Sri Lanka. In the afternoon return to Kandy for a tour including a visit to the fabled Temple of the Tooth followed by a cultural dance show.

Day 3
Kandy to Habarana

Leave Kandy today and travel to Habarana stopping on the way to visit the Dambulla Cave temples and the Matale Spice Garden. The amazing complex of cave temples contain more than 150 Buddha images and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. After checking into your hotel there is one of the highlights of the tour when you visit, and can climb to the top, of the stunning Lion Rock fortress at Sigiriya, a must do activity while visiting the country's cultural triangle.

Day 4
Habarana to Polonnaruwa

Today you are taken to visit Polonnaruwa, a medieval city and another world heritage site, which rose to fame as the capital of the island in the 10th and 12 centuries. The monuments here are well preserved and show the glory of Sri Lanka's past. Highlights of the visit are the Royal Palace complex and the spectacular Gal Vihare where four massive images of the Buddha have been cut from a single slab of granite. Later drive the one hour back to Habarana where the rest of the day and evening is at leisure.

Day 5
Habarana to Passikudah

After breakfast check out of your hotel in Habarana and begin the three hour road journey to Passikudah and the resort of Amaya Beach, where you stay for the next two nights. Overlooking Pasikudah Beach, this plush seafront hotel is a seven minute walk from the Anilana Pasikuda resort and 10 miles away from the mangroves and marshes of the Valaichchenai Lagoon. Relax after you journey and enjoy the hotel facilities or go out and explore.

Day 6
Amaya Beach

A full day to relax and enjoy all that this luxurious beach resort has to offer. All the rooms are bright and elegant with balconies and have free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs and minibars. Upgraded rooms have beach views and whirlpool baths and airy polished suites have separate living areas and some have dining rooms. Amenities at the hotel include a spa, gym and a chic beachfront pool and a separate children's pool. There is also a bar, laid back Asian restaurant and a kid's club.

Day 7
Amaya Beach

Another day in paradise! Amaya Beach is one of the top ten hotels in Sri Lanka and sits in beautiful Passikudah Bay, a long stretch of coastline renowned for its calm and shallow waters which are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and all other watersports. The outer bay has an extensive coral reef and there are scattered coral areas near the shore which together form one of the best known reef systems in the Indian Ocean making it a popular dive spot.

Day 8
Amaya Beach to Colombo

Possibly time for one last swim in the pool or ocean before you are picked up from your hotel to begin the six and a half hour drive to Colombo. On arrival at the capital of Sri Lanka check into your hotel and relax after the journey before going out and exploring on your own or on an organised tour seeing all the sights. Bargain for souvenirs in the markets, take a tuk tuk ride around the city and have a very English teatime experience at the Galle Face Hotel on the seafront.

Day 9
End of tour

Today your wonderful tour around Sri Lanka comes to an end. Possibly time for some more sightseeing or last minute shopping for souvenirs before you are picked up at your hotel and driven the one hour to the international airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey back home. Sri Lanka is a fascinating and beautiful country and on this discovery tour you will see so many of the sights that will leave you with a wealth of great memories.
