Perched high on a hill overlooking the vine-covered UNESCO World Heritage Site of Portugal’s Douro Valley and the river below, the Six Senses is a dream destination just over an hour’s drive from the international airport at Oporto. Set in magnificent wine and port producing countryside – the Douro Valley is in fact the oldest demarcated wine region in the world – Six Senses offers superluxurious accommodation with breathtaking views as well as plenty of fascinating places to visit .
A beautifully renovated 19th-century manor house, Six Senses offers a range of spacious rooms and suites, each one decorated in cool contemporary yet natural style, with terraces or balconies, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the woodland, river, vineyards or courtyard. All have king, queen or twin beds, air conditioning, non-allergenic pillows, a personal safe, tea and coffee making facilities, minibar, Wi-Fi and a 48inch flatscreen TV with satellite channels. Bathrooms are of course lavish, and come equipped with hairdryers. Baby cots can be provided on request. Suites are even more splendid with oversized bathtubs, some with panoramic views, while the one-bedroom loft-style Vineyard Villa Suites sare the ultimate romantic hideaway, and has access to a garden and pool shared with just four other villas.
While some of the suites have private plunge pools there is also a large outdoor pool set in acres of lush gardens, and plenty of sunloungers from which to admire the stunning views. There is a gym, a tennis court, and of course a Six Senses Spa, offering a whole menu of relaxing and rejuventating holistic treatments. You can take a trip on the Douro in a sailing boat, or a luxurious vintage boat with a picnic lunch. There are train trips along the river, helicopter trips, bikes for hite, aas well as horse riding, canoeing, rafting and golf. And, this being prime wine-making country, don’t forget to take a trip to at least one local winery – in some you can get to experience treading the grapes, if that takes your fancy.
Eating at Six Senses Douro Valley is a special experience, as much of the produce coming from the local valley and surrounding area, as well as an organic vegetable and herb garden right on the estate. The restaurant is open all day for regional and local dishes, including wood-baked bread and other oven dishes, while the Dining Room offers fine dining in a historic and intimate setting. Th Wine Library & terrace offers a pre-dining tapas and extensive wine list, and the Quinta Bar & Lounge offers an upbeat atmosphere to enjoy drinks as well as tapas and local cheeses. Foodies can join the Chef’s Table and experience a dinner hosted and prepared by the chef accompanied by selected wines. Finally if you just want to relax in the comfort of your lovely room, you can enjoy in-room dining with a choice of dishes from the menu or a more healthy selection.
