Overview
This nine-day self-drive adventure sets off from Melbourne, following the rugged and spectacular coastline to Adelaide, from where you’ll visit the unspoiled natural paradise of Kangaroo Island. Along the way you’ll take in national parks, tempting beaches and dramatic waterfalls, and you’ll have plenty of time for hiking, surfing or just relaxing and soaking up the sights. It’s a truly unforgettable adventure.
Day 1
Melbourne to Apollo Bay
Your road trip begins in Melbourne, as you cross the West Gate Bridge and take the Princes Highway to Geelong, the largest provincial city in Victoria. From here you’ll continue to Torquay, the start of the Great Ocean Road, known as Australia’s surfing capital, before following the coast road through Anglesea to the picturesque town of Lorne. Here you can stop to see the impressive Erskine Falls, before taking one of the world’s most beautiful drives along the scenic coastline to Apollo Bay.

Day 2
Apollo Bay to Warrnambool
You’ll continue along the Great Ocean Road today, travelling this morning through the Otway National Park and past the awe-inspiring rock formations of the Twelve Apostles, huge stone pillars carved by the crashing waves of the Southern Ocean. Continuing past Port Campbell you will see London Bridge and follow the Shipwreck Coast to Port Campbell and on to Warrnambool.

Day 3
Warrnambool to Halls Gap
Today you’ll travel through Penhurst to Dunkeld, then make the scenic drive through the Grampians National Park to Halls Gap. Along the way, you’ll probably want to stop off to explore McKenzie Falls, Reids Lookout and the Balconies.

Day 4
Halls Gap
You have a day off from racking up the miles today, as you take some time to stretch your legs and explore the spectacular scenery of the Grampians National Park.

Day 5
Halls Gap to Mount Gambier
Today you’ll return to Dunkeld, then travel through the towns of Hamilton, Coleraine and Casterton to reach Mount Gambier, where you can visit the surrounding crater lakes and the Sunken Garden.

Day 6
Mount Gambier to Adelaide
Today you’ll continue through the coastal ports of Robe and Kingston, travelling alongside Coorong National Park and skirting Lake Albert and Lake Alexandria. You’ll visit the towns of Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge, then take the freeway into the heart of Adelaide.

Day 7
Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
This morning, after returning your vehicle at Adelaide Airport, you’ll take a flight to Kingscote, on Kangaroo Island, where you’ll collect another vehicle. Kangaroo Island is the largest island off the South Australian coast – a spectacular and unspoiled landscape of richly diverse native flora and fauna.

Day 8
Kangaroo Island
You have the whole day at leisure today to explore Kangaroo Island. Visit the attractive beach at Emu Bay, and the rugged cliffs and roaring surf of the south coast, and don’t miss the spectacular stalactites of Admirals Arch, or the majestic granite boulders known as Remarkable Rocks. Other highlights include Flinders Chase National Park, Kelly Hill Caves and the Koala Walk.

Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
Today you’ll have more time to continue enjoying Kangaroo Island before dropping your vehicle off at Kingscote Airport, ready for your return flight to Adelaide.
