Overview
Hit the road for a self-drive tour taking in the spectacular landscapes and picturesque towns of this beautiful section of Australia's south coast. Along the way you'll be able to sample delicious food and some of Australia's finest wines, swim at gorgeous beaches, enjoy some whale-watching and feast your eyes on the breathtakingly rugged coastal views.
Day 1
Melbourne – Apollo Bay
Your trip begins as you pick up your rental car and head to Geelong, then take the Surf Coast Highway to the pretty coastal resort of Torquay, Victoria’s surfing capital. Here you'll join the Great Ocean Road, one of Australia's most spectacular drives, and may like to make a short detour to enjoy the magnificent views over the surfing hotspot of Bells Beach. You'll continue on past the scenic resorts of Anglesea and Lorne to arrive at Apollo Bay, an attractive fishing port in the foothills of the Otway Ranges. Here you'll find excellent restaurants and cafes, art galleries and museums, and a spectacular seaside golf course, as well as spectacular coastal views.

Day 2
Cape Otway – Port Fairy
You'll depart Apollo Bay after breakfast, and may wish to stop at the nearby Department of Environment Boardwalk for a stroll through the lush rainforest of Otway National Park, or take a guided tour of Cape Otway lighthouse, one of Australia's oldest. You'll then continue along the Great Ocean Road, through Port Campbell, a small crayfishing village situated near the giant rock stacks known as the Twelve Apostles. Next you'll head for Warnambool, the only city on the rugged Shipwreck Coast. Between late May and August each year, Southern Right Whales come from the Antarctic to the area known as Logan’s Beach Whale Nursery to give birth – don't miss the chance to see this amazing sight from the clifftop viewing platform. From here, you'll join the Princes Highway for the short drive to Port Fairy, a charming fishing village, where you'll stay overnight.
