It’s all about the sea at the 5* deluxe LUX* Belle Mare – the sea in this case being the Indian Ocean. Here, at the seaside village of Belle Mare, on Mauritius’s east coast, you’ll be surrounded by white beach. The Kelly Hoppen-designed LUX* resort provides every luxury to help you unwind in what they call ‘Island Light’. The emphasis is on relaxation and enjoying the vibrant scenery – all within 45km (1 hour) of the airport.
At the resort spa, you can let the LUX* ME experts design your perfect spa package, integrating treatments, classes and exercise elements into a tailor-made programme, to make sure you get the most from your stay. New to the resort is the Me Zhengliao treatment, a healing practice from the Chinese Daoji clinic that aims to help the body function better. Retreats are also on offer, allowing guests to immerse themselves in a programme that combines nutrition, yoga, fitness and spa treatments.
Golf is a bit of a thing at the 5* deluxe LUX* Belle Mare, with three championship courses within easy reach: the Rodney Wright and Peter Alliss-designed Links, the spectacular Le Touessrok, set on its own island, Ile aux Cerfs (Deer Island), and the Ernie Els-designed Four Seasons, featuring six oceanfront holes. You can also organise special golf trips or events.
You’ll find 174 suites in total, every one of which faces the sea. There are Beach Suites and interconnected Family Suites, Pool Junior Suites and Lagoon Suites, Honeymoon Suites and Super LUX* Suites, to name a few. All feature Hoppen’s fresh, contemporary décor, a Sleep Tight bed, a terrace or balcony, air-conditioning, flatscreen TV and minibar. Some also have a private whirlpool bath. In addition, there are 12 individual villas, set in a sheltered bay, all with a private heated pool and garden and butler service.
There are activities at the resort to suit everyone. On dry land, you can try your hand at pétanque, beach volleyball, ping pong or tennis. There’s also a programme of exercise classes – including yoga. Or you can take the opportunity to cycle around the local villages and markets, or set off for a hike in the lush surroundings. Not surprisingly, there’s much on offer off dry land too – how about kitesurfing, diving, swimming with dolphins or big game fishing nearby? Or just have a swim in what is one of the island’s largest pools which is also heated. The PLAY team are available to keep children aged 3–11 entertained, with everything from treasure hunts to teddy tennis lessons.
Food is taken seriously at the resort, which has its own dry-ageing chamber for maturing meats and an ice cream laboratory. You can choose to dine at The Kitchen (authentic island dining and great views), Beach Rouge (relaxed Mediterranean), Duck Laundry (comtempory Chinese cusiner) or Amari by Vineet, (Royal Indian setting by Michelin starred chef Vineet Bhatia). You can also take drinks and light snacks at the KBar, Café LUX* or traditional Mauritian run at Mari Kontan. Private dining is also available, whether beachside or in your room.
