Overview
On this wonderful nine day self drive tour that begins and ends in Cape Town, you will see so many of the famous sights in South Africa as well as sampling some of the country's best wines. After leaving the coast you will head for the heart of wine country stopping at Franschhoek then on to Oudtshoorn and Knysna along the famous Garden Route. Then stop at Hermanus for a spot of whale watching before returning to Cape Town with plenty of time to explore this great city.
Day 1
Cape Town to Franschoek
On arrival at Cape Town International Airport collect your hire car before driving to the winelands and your first hotel, Le Franschoek. Set in the gorgeous scenery amidst the vineyards this is beautiful Cape Dutch style hotel is the perfect place to relax after your journey. With regular wine tasings and a spa or the lively town of Franschoek a few miles down the road there's plenty to keep you as busy or as quiet as you desire.

Day 2
Franschoek to Oudtshoorn
Spend the morning relaxing and enjoying all the hotel facilities and exploring the surrounding area of Franschhoek, which is well known for its award winning restaurants and wineries. There are lots of wine estates in this lovely part of South Africa and you can take tours around most of them and sample some of the vintages. After your day in wine country begin your journey to Oudtshoorn for a night's stay at Rosenhof Country House.

Day 3
Oudtshoorn to Knysna
Rosenhof Country House is a quaint and elegant B&B surrounded by pretty gardens on the edge of town. This morning you should spend some time in Oudtshoorn before beginning the next leg of your journey to Knysna. On the way it is worth stopping at the Cango Caves and Cango Wildlife Ranch or have a fun time experiencing the famous Ostrich Farm at Oudtshoorn. On arrival at Knysna on the beautiful Garden Route check into your next hotel.

Day 4
Knysna
Continue your sightseeing with a whole day spent visiting some of South Africa's most beautiful beaches, mountains and rivers. There are a countless number of activities to enjoy in Knysna from whale-watching, hiking, golfing, swimming and, for the more adventurous, bungee jumping. Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best known places and is famous for its oysters and seahorses and is buzzing and vibrant throughout the year. Situated on the banks of a gleaming lagoon, it's also an artistic town with great shops..

Day 5
Knysna to Hermanus
Spend some more time today relaxing on the beach, shopping or enjoying more of the activities in this wonderful town and have lunch in one of the many good restaurants before leaving and beginning the drive to Hermanus, which is most famous for its whale watching. In fact the town is considered by some to offer the best land-based whale watching in South Africa and even the world. Arrive in time to check into your next hotel then go out and explore.

Day 6
Hermanus
A full day to explore Hermanus and the local area. This town is the only one in the world with its own Whale Crier who is on hand to make sure nobody misses the sight of a huge group of Southern Right Whales passing by. Hermanus is also rich in history and there are lots of trips and excursions out to sea that can be booked here. The town itself has plenty of top notch restaurants and there are plenty of shops and boutiques to keep you occupied.

Day 7
Hermanus to Cape Town
Today you can spend as much time as you like in Hermanus, possibly going whale watching again, before beginning the drive back to Cape Town where you stay for the last two nights of the trip. As this is a self-drive holiday, you can stop along the route anywhere that takes your fancy and you can build in your own schedule. But as Cape Town is one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world, it's worth getting there with plenty of time to spare.

Day 8
Cape Town
A full day exploring Cape Town and the local area. There is so much to see and do here that you will be spoilt for choice, but one must activity is to take the cable car to the top of iconic Table Mountain for wonderful views over the entire city. It's also worth visiting the chic Victoria and Alfred waterfront for shopping and restaurants, take a trip out to the Cape of Good Hope or to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for so many years, or to the beautiful Kirstenbosh Botanical Gardens.

Day 9
Depart Cape Town
You can spend the whole morning exploring more of the amazing sights in Cape Town and the surrounding area and possibly shopping for some last minute souvenirs before dropping off your car at the airport and catching an onward flight or beginning your journey back home. This great Winelands and Whales tour makes a great add on to any longer stay in the Rainbow Nation and will leave you with so many wonderful and lasting memories.
