This glamorous Rocco Forte hotel has a colourful history. Built in the 19th century by renowned architect Giuseppe Valadier, it has in its time played host to such legendary names as Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. Today it makes a great choice for families, couples or business travellers, with its prime location, close to the Valadier-designed Piazza del Popolo.

De Russie’s Wellness Zone calls itself the most peaceful spa in Rome, and it may well be. Here you can hang out at the hydrotherapy pool, or have a luxury treatment, such as a signature Carita Paris facial, a Cinque Mondes natural purifying ritual or a ‘Fleurs de Bali’ facial.

Room Description

The hotel has 122 beautifully chic rooms and suites, masterminded by Olga Polizzi in conjunction with architect Tommaso Ziffer, two Italian design-world heavyweights. Each room provides premium amenities, such as high-quality bedlinen and lush fabrics, a marble bathroom and work desk. As well as single and classic rooms, guests can choose from executive, deluxe and superior deluxe rooms, or junior, classic or executive suites, which all feature a separate living area. Grandest of all are the Vaselli, Popolo, Picasso and Nijinsky suites, each of which has a private terrace – the Nijinsky also has its own kitchen, bar area and library.

The hotel’s 2,800m2 terraced Secret Garden, also designed by Valadier, is at your disposal. Outside the hotel, you’re surrounded by some of the world’s most famous landmarks, starting with Piazza del Popolo, just a stone’s throw away. Also close by are Villa Borghese, with a delightful park and zoo, St Peter’s Square and Basilica and Piazza Navona. There are fashionable shopping areas aplenty, too, such as via Condotti and via Borgognona. You can also arrange an expert-guided trip, such as a visit to a nearby winery or to Ostia to see the Roman mosaics or, for film buffs, take the ‘Great Beauty Tour’, which explores the Rome of director Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning film The Great Beauty. You can even arrange a teenager’s tour – a supervised experience that’s specially tailored to teenage interests.

Diners at the hotel’s Le Jardin de Russie can eat, as you might suspect from the name, in the Secret Garden itself. Celebrated chef Fulvio Pierangelini, aided by executive chef Nazzareno Menghini, have put together a sophisticated Italian menu, which might include cuttlefish, tagliolini with white truffle or ossobuco with crispy saffron risotto, as well as fish and meat from the Himalayan pink salt grill, such as Wagyu beef. You can also try a signature cocktail on the private piazza at exclusive Stravinskij Bar – where light meals are available to lunchtime.
