Just an hour from Denpasar international airport, the Como Shambhala Estate is a stunning spa resort with a difference. Close to Ubud and set among jungle above the River Ayung, it is centred around a long-revered spring called The Source that provides waters thought to be healing for its luxurious treatments. A surrounding landscape of tranquil rice paddies, volcanoes and forest completes the instantly relaxing atmosphere.
When the whole resort is dedicated to wellness, you know that the treatments on offer are going to be a cut above. Massage therapy should be high on your agenda and the estate has a range on offer, from those designed to relieve muscle tension and help with injuries to super relaxing massages that will make sure you leave one of its nine treatment rooms (three of which are for couples) as if you’re floating on air. Make time especially for its signature massage using a blend of oils to calm and rejuvenate. Soothing baths, wraps and mud treatments are also available and will leave your skin glowing like new.
The resort’s 23 acres are home to a variety of tranquil accommodation. Five freestanding residences, each inspired by a different element, encompass 21 suites or you can opt for one of five Retreat Villas (one or two-bedroom, with private pool) or one of four Private Villas (two or three-bedroom with extra living space and private pool). Constructed from local materials, including traditional alang-alang thatched roofing, inside each residence is a mix of Asian and European influences with handmade furniture and Indonesian artefacts. Each suite has one bedroom except for the Como Suite in the Umabona residence, which has two and a Jacuzzi, infinity pool and plunge pool, and all have access to the residence’s pools, lounge areas and pavilions. The Shambhala Suites, the master suite in each residence, also enjoy a private Jacuzzi.
Whether you’re keen to get active with treks through local rice fields, hikes, bike rides and guided walks or prefer the more sedate allure of yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, hydrotherapy and meditation, the resort has something for you. Start your time here by having a ‘wellness programme’ devised for you to match your goals, whether that’s getting fitter, detoxing, managing stress or weight loss. The therapists can then recommend treatments and activities to help you on your way. And if you’re a parent needing some time to yourself, babysitting services are on hand. There’s also tennis courts, a climbing wall, sauna and steam room and a gym, as well as indoor and outdoor pools.
The resort’s two restaurants offer a healthy menu with not a calorie counter in sight. Instead, the diet is based around balanced eating, with flavourful dishes and raw food and dietary needs can easily be catered for with soymilk, yeast-free breads, unprocessed honey and minimal salt. Meat, fish and vegetables are organic and locally sourced where possible, with influences ranging from Indonesian to Italian to Indian. So whether you go to Glow, a modern all-day open-kitchen venue with salads, simple dishes and energising juices, or Kudus House for a more gourmet experience of flavours and spices from around Indonesia set in a 150-year-old Javanese residence, you’re sure to depart feeling satisfied and nourished.
