The Kimberley Darwin-Broome Cruise

Description

With its majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls and diverse wildlife, the unspoilt Kimberley region in the north of Western Australia is a spectacular destination for an unforgettable adventure. This 10-night cruise takes you to some of the area's most fascinating sites, travelling on board Coral Discovery or Coral Expeditions, which features comfortable cabins and staterooms, a spa pool and specialist crew whose insider knowledge will help you make the most of your trip.

Day 1
Depart Darwin

You'll board Coral Expeditions early this morning and set sail straight away, crossing Cambridge Gulf and sailing into Western Australian waters. This afternoon you'll join your expedition staff for an introduction to the Kimberley, before getting to know your fellow travellers and crew over welcome cocktails.

Day 2
King George River and Falls

Today you'll explore the mighty King George river. You'll board Explorer, a specially designed excursion vessel, to admire the scenic gorges, then change to inflatable Zodiacs to cruise close to the base of the magnificent King George Falls, which, at 80 metres high, are the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia. Later, you'll visit Tranquil Bay for a beach stroll.

Day 3
Vansittart Bay DC3 and Jar Island

Today you'll join your expedition leader on a walk across the salt flats of Vansittart Bay to view the wreckage of a US Air Force DC3 which crash-landed here during WWII. You'll then continue to Jar Island to admire the outstanding rock art gallery. Here, your guest lecturers will point out fine examples of the Kimberley's 20,000-year-old Bradshaw Paintings (Gwion).

Day 4
Hathaway's Hideaway and Mitchell Falls

After anchoring in Winyalken Bay this morning you'll travel ashore aboard Explorer to explore the maze of natural sandstone caves known as Hathaway's Hideaway. Later, you may like to take an optional scenic helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau to admire the views of the spectacular four-tiered Mitchell Falls. This evening, you can savour a gourmet Aussie beach barbecue as you enjoy the spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.

Day 5
Bigge Island and Careening Bay

Today you'll admire the rock art gallery on Bigge Island, which features fine examples of both Wandjina and Bradshaw art. You'll then explore Careening Bay, named by Phillip Parker King after his ship HMC Mermaid was careened, or turned on one side for repairs, here during his second voyage of discovery in the Kimberley. You'll be taken to see a large boab tree on which the inscription "HMC Mermaid - 1820" is still clearly visible almost 200 years later.

Day 6
Prince Regent River and King Cascades

Today you'll cruise Prince Regent River aboard Explorer to reach the breathtaking King Cascades, a waterfall cascading over terraced rock formations. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch at beautiful Camp Creek, where you'll have time for a leisurely swim in the freshwater pools.

Day 7
Montgomery Reef and Doubtful Bay

Today you'll witness the unforgettable sight of Montgomery Reef appearing to rise out of the ocean as the tide ebbs. You'll board Explorer and the Zodiacs to experience this natural phenomenon up close, as well as to see the reef's diverse marine life, which includes turtles, manta rays and reef sharks. Later, you'll cruise through scenic Doubtful Bay.

Day 8
Raft Point and Ruby Falls

Today you'll cruise through Kuri Bay, home to the South Sea pearl industry, then travel ashore at Raft Point to visit a fascinating Aboriginal rock art gallery filled with Wandjina art and Bradshaw Paintings. Later, you'll explore Red Cone Creek and enjoy a cooling dip at Ruby Falls.

Day 9
Horizontal Falls and Buccaneer Archipelago

This morning you'll cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago, made up of over 800 islands. In Talbot Bay, you'll board the Zodiacs for an exhilarating ride through the unique Horizontal Falls, described by David Attenborough as "one the greatest natural wonders in the world". Later, you'll explore Silica Beach on Hidden Island, with its stunning white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Day 10
Lacepede Islands

Today you'll cruise through Pender Bay and, weather and tides permitting, visit the Lacepede Islands. This nature reserve has been designated by Bird Life International as an Important Bird Area, as it supports up to 18,000 breeding pairs of brown boobies and roseate terns, possibly the largest such population in the world. You'll board the Zodiacs and explore the island's lagoon, keeping an eye out for marine birdlife including Australian pelicans, frigatebirds, egrets, gulls and terns. These islands are also Western Australia's most significant breeding grounds for the green turtle. This evening you'll enjoy farewell cocktails with your fellow guests and crew.

Day 11

Your unforgettable trip comes to an end as you disembark in Broome this morning.

The service provided by Jeff and his colleagues was extremely good. He was proactive, helpful and always quick to respond to any questions. All the arrangements worked out perfectly and the children and I had an excellent trip.

Flew to Darwin

Everything went perfectly apart from the fact that we arrived too late in Perth to avail of the hotel overnight - we stayed in the airport because we only had about 5 hours - but everything else was so well organised that this was only a minor blip in what was an otherwise brilliantly organised trip.

Singapore Airlines were very professional and well organised even on the huge 380s - they retain the old fashioned notion of service. Very good care and reminders from you - I will use you again.

Flew to Darwin

From start to finish I had excellent service. I had a designated person to phone with any problems/changes and loved the personal way I was dealt with. Even a few days before my trip I had a phone call (on a Sunday) to check everything was OK. Cannot fault my trip. Will use this service again for any other trip I may make.
