Overview
Japan is a truly timeless country, a place where ancient traditions are fused with modern life as if it were the most natural thing in the world. On the surface Japan appears exceedingly modern, but travelling around offers lots of opportunities to connect with its fascinating culture. On this nine day tour you begin by staying in and exploring the capital city Tokyo before travelling on the famous bullet train to Kyoto and Osaka.
Day 1
Arrival at Tokyo Haneda or Narita Airport
On arrival at either Tokyo Haneda or Narita Airport you will be met by one of our tour representatives who will help you with transportation into the city - either boarding the right train or finding the appropriate shuttle bus. Day 2
Tokyo
Spend a half day taking in some of the many highlights Tokyo has to offer in the company of a local guide and using the efficient public transportation system. Visit Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous Shinto shrine that is one of the most popular sites for a traditional Japanese wedding. The park that surrounds the shrine is tranquil, but outside are two of the city’s most popular shopping districts - Harajuku and Omotesando. Then take the subway to Asakusa, a part of Tokyo’s atmospheric old town.

Day 3
Tokyo
Another full day in the city when you can go out on your own. Today you may want to explore Akihabara, an area made famous by its hundreds of electronics shops, and more recently as the centre for Tokyo’s anime, manga, video game, maid cafés, and figurine culture. 'Electric Town' in particular is the go-to place for anime and manga fans, electronics and gadget aficionados, and those seeking out the vibrant Japanese pop culture scene.

Day 4
Tokyo - Kyoto
This morning after breakfast you head to Tokyo Station to board the shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital and home to around 2,000 shrines and temples, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Take the Nozomi super express train – reserved seat tickets are in your info pack. On arrival at Kyoto Station, with the assistance of your self guide application, head to your next hotel for check-in. Then go out and explore.

Day 5
Kyoto
Meet your guide at hotel reception and start a half day tour of the city by public transport. First stop is Kinkaku-ji Temple, which is also known as the Golden Pavilion, whose top two floors are covered in handmade gold leaf. A short distance from Kinkaku-ji is the serene Ryoan-ji Temple, which is famous for its well-maintained rock garden. The tour ends in the centre of the city, where you have free time to do some souvenir shopping around the Nishiki, Kawaramachi, and Shijo-dori areas.

Day 6
Kyoto
Today is free for you to go out and experience the delights of the city on your own. Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers, who are often found in the Gion district.

Day 7
Kyoto - Osaka
This morning, using your self guide application, head to Kyoto Station to board the bullet train for Osaka, Japan’s culinary capital, where you will discover why the motto that the city’s flamboyant inhabitants live by is kuiadore – “to eat oneself bankrupt.” On arrival at Shin-Osaka Station, head for your next hotel for check-in. Then the rest of the day and evening is free for you to go out and explore seeing some of the sights.

Day 8
Osaka
A full day to relax or go out and explore more of Osaka, a large port city and commercial centre, which is known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food. The 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle, which has undergone several restorations, is the city's main historical landmark. It's surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees. Sumiyoshi-taisha is among Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines.
