THE OFFER WAS VERY tempting: ‘Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.’ This is the promise of The BodyHoliday resort available in St Lucia. Those keen to recharge their batteries are presented with a busy programme of activities and spa treatments that will leave you ‘feeling alive’. How could we resist?

The resort is on a crescent beach in the northwest of St Lucia and sits in 42 acres of lush, tropical gardens, a 30-minute drive from the island’s capital, Castries.

The brochure promised just what we wanted - a pre-wedding break that would help me and my fiance Paul to cope with the chaos of our big day which was to take place in the historic town of Arcos de la Frontera, near Seville in southern Spain, later in the summer. I’ve been involved with sport all my life - my father is former Ryder Cup golf captain Bernard Gallacher and my husband is the England rugby player Paul Sampson - so as a couple Paul and I are into fitness and health, and the whole concept of looking after ourselves.

At The BodyHoliday you can exercise regularly and I took advantage of all the spa facilities with a massage or a beauty treatment every day. Paul and I also enjoy eating healthily and we were well catered for at the resort’s three excellent restaurants.

As a holiday the whole setup was my idea of heaven - the perfect prewedding ‘honeymoon’. We decided to go without the kids - we thought it was important to have a breather from our hectic schedules on our own. Besides, young children aren’t allowed in the resort and, much as I love kids, it was more peaceful not having any around on this occasion.

I have a strict diet regime. I’m a pescatarian, so I eat fish but no meat. Paul isn’t strictly vegetarian, he does eat some meat but, like me, has mostly fish and an awful lot of vegetables.

You tailor the holiday to suit your needs

There was plenty of fish on the menus each day at BodyHoliday. My favourite dish was the locally caught king fish, a Caribbean, very meaty delicacy - just like having a steak but it’s fish, perfect for me.

You eat it with salad and rice. We ate plenty of fish, salad and sushi. We also signed up for lots of exercise classes. I’d never done Pilates or yoga before and tried them both. But the highlight for me was the beauty treatments. I love being pampered and a massage is my idea

of heaven. Some of the treatments were complex, such as the one I had for lymphatic drainage.

There were holistic therapies, including acupuncture, iridology (examining the eye’s iris to discover the state of your health) and reiki, a traditional Japanese technique for stress reduction.

The resort regime isn’t strict. If you want you can have a glass of wine in the evenings with your meal and it’s nice to have that balance. You can detox if you want to but it’s up to you. I worked out regularly in the gym - where there are also fitness studios for the classes - but the exercise programme isn’t overwhelming. The idea is that you tailor the holiday to suit your needs. There are many different things available but it’s your choice - an attitude I like.

Another plus point is that the BodyHoliday staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Service may not always be ultraprompt but you don’t mind when the ambience is so warm and everyone is trying to do their best. The rooms are also spotless and everything is kept in excellent order. I’ve visited St Lucia before and so we ventured out to dinner a couple of times to restaurants outside the resort which were great.

Our travel plans are limited by the rugby season as Paul plays most of the year - it was hard enough to find a window for the wedding. A lot of our friends are professional sportsmen and women so it was a challenge to make sure everybody could attend. As far as St Lucia is concerned, I would love to return for some more Caribbean bliss.
