If you like luxury and shopping, head for Dom Pedro Palace, one of Lisbon’s most opulent hotels. It provides 5-star comfort and a great selection of shopping options nearby – the famous Amoreiras Shopping Centre is opposite. It’s just 15 minutes’ drive from the airport and, once you arrive, the city is easily accessible by public transport.
Use of the hotel’s SPA Aquae is free for all guests staying in the tower rooms and suites. There, modern life fades away in a calm, relaxed space that offers a chromo-therapy pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath and five treatment rooms.
There are 18 world-class golf courses within reach of the hotel, and Dom Pedro residents pay reduced green fees.
The Dom Pedro’s 263 rooms are the height of luxury, offering stunning views of the city and the river Tagus. Classic rooms, some of them corner rooms, feature a king-size bed, seating area, work desk and wifi. Further up the hotel’s 21 floors – on floors 15 to 19 – are the Tower rooms. These are the executive rooms and give guests access to the hotel’s VIP lounge. On the 20th floor are the suites, which have additional benefits such as free spa access, excellent views, extra living space, walk-in closets and an extra bathroom. The impressive penthouse suite takes up the whole of the top floor and offers panoramic views, a private lift, a separate dining room, kitchen and roof terraces, hydro-massage cabin, and a dedicated butler and maid.
Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s main boulevard, is within walking distance – it contains much of architectural significance, as well as a host of high-end shops. Also within walking distance are the Estrela Gardens, the Basilica da Estrela and the Science and Natural History museums, as well as the lavishly decorated Church of São Roque – venture inside to find out why it’s been called the most expensive chapel in the world. The cosmopolitan Bairro Alto, with its many restaurants, Fado houses and hip nightlife, is also nearby. If you’re into watersports, there are surfing and windsurfing opportunities nearby.
Gourmet Italian dining takes place in the hotel’s smart Il Gattopardo restaurant, which has an outdoor terrace for eating al fresco as well as its own cocktail bar. For a more relaxed setting, there’s the Bistrot Le Café, which offers Portuguese buffets, light lunches and suppers and late-night snacks.
