Your adventure begins when you arrive at the lobby of The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in Mumbai where registration and check in formalities are completed for the Maharaja's Express Train Tour. You are then taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Rail Terminus where a welcome drink is waiting before you board the train. As you depart for Ajanta relax before joining fellow guests for the first of many memorable dinners.
Today your train arrives in Ajanta and you are taken on a morning excursion to the World Heritage site of Ajanta Caves from Jalgaon Railway Station. These Buddhist cave temples were sculpted out of hill sides between the 2nd century BC to 7th Century AD and are famous for their exquisite colourful frescoes and sculptures showing incidents from the life of the Buddha and the Jatakas. Later return to the train and have lunch and dinner on board on route to Udaipur.
Wake up today and admire the magnificent landscape as you arrive into Udaipur. Tours include visits to the City Palace and Crystal Gallery. Experience traditional hospitality over lunch at an exclusive venue and later you can take a walking tour through the colourful and vibrant old market or visit the vintage car collection of the royal family. Tonight there is an enthralling Sound and Light show in the palace.
This morning the Maharaja's Express continues her journey through the pristine Mewar region while you enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lunch. Pass through dramatic landscapes of the Thar Desert, before arriving into the Blue City of Jodhpur, which is set like a jewel amid golden sands and is famous for its magnificent forts and palaces. On a walking tour experience the sights and sounds of the Old Clock Tower market and later visit the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort where you are treated to a Royal Cocktail evening with a wide array of sumptuous Marwar culinary delights that are served in the fort's royal courtyard. Then return to the train and continue your journey to glorious Bikaner.
Today you arrive at the desert kingdom of Bikaner. Take an optional excursion to Deshnok Temple, popularly known as Rat Temple, or Lalgarh Palace Museum. You can also visit a camel breeding farm or shop for Kundan Jewellery. In the afternoon visit the unassailable fortress of Junagarh where you can take part in a camel-cart procession followed by sundowner cocktails, a barbecue and see a folk music and dance performance on the sand dunes.
Another highlight of the tour today when the Maharaja's Express stops at the 'Pink City' of Jaipur. Built in the 18th century, the city is a pristine jewel in the crown of the desert state of Rajasthan. The city is renowned for its magnificent palaces, forts and temples. Your tour begins with an exhibition elephant polo match followed by cocktails and lunch. Then you visit the famous Amber Fort which stands on a ridge just outside the city. Surrounded by fortified battlements overlooking Maota Lake, the tour includes the royal apartments, the Chamber of Mirrors and the Hall of Victory. Later there is time for shopping.
An early morning arrival where a safari tour is awaiting at Ranthambore National Park. Originally a private hunting ground of the Maharajas, Ranthambore is now a national park famous for its open sightings of tigers, sambar, chital, nilgai, chinkara, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, jackal and leopard. After breakfast at Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge, return to the train and continue your journey to the fabled deserted Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri where you can admire the changing landscape while savouring a hearty lunch.
Agra to Delhi
Today the train continues on its last leg of the journey towards the magical city of Agra, which is home to one of the world’s great architectural wonders - the Taj Mahal. An early morning arrival is followed by a tour to world famous Taj, which is an incomparable marvel constructed entirely out of white marble. Enjoy a Champagne breakfast gazing at the Taj Mahal, then return to the train for lunch as you continue to Delhi, where your royal railway journey comes to an end.
