First it was all about apples . . . but now the Apple Isle's contribution to world food extends to premium seafood, cheese, bread, honey, nuts, stone fruit, craft beer, whisky and intensely flavoured cool-climate wines. Many smaller producers are owned and operated by passionate foodies and Tasmania is seemingly made for a driving holiday visiting farm-gate suppliers and providores. After you’ve sampled the produce on this great tour, book tables at a few good restaurant and see how the local chefs transform it.
You can take this Food and Wine Trail tour around the beautiful Australian island of Tasmania as part of a longer visit or just as a one off while travelling Down Under or visiting New Zealand. Begin by collecting your hire car in the town of Launceston in the north of the island and enjoy the rest of the day and evening exploring. Today is a good time to visit the James Boags Brewery or take a walk around the stunning Cataract Gorge. Tonight dine out in one of the trendy restaurants. Overnight Launceston.
Day 2
Launceston to Stanley
Today you drive the 200 miles from Launceston to Stanley, travelling through Deloraine and taking a slight detour to taste smoked baby salmon at 41 Degrees South Salmon and Ginseng Farm before heading up to Devonport. Here you can enjoy any of the numerous roadside stalls and produce farmers markets on the way to Stanley as you drive along the beautiful coast line. Overnight tonight at Stanley.
Day 3
Stanley
A food filled day today. After a hearty Tasmanian breakfast this morning leave your hotel and buy a fresh crayfish from Stanley wharf and have a lunchtime picnic at one of the deserted beaches. Your next stop of the day should be at Providore 24 where you can buy some Tasmanian gourmet produce. Later have dinner at the award winning Old Cable Station, or for a casual dining option try the bistro at the Stanley Hotel, which is a food lover’s dream.
Day 4
Stanley to Devonport
A shorter time on the road today but lots to eat and drink when you drive the 100 miles back towards Devonport and stop off at Boat Harbour. Here you can take a stroll along Boat Harbour Beach and enjoy lunch at a local cafe. Then drive on to Burnie to sample some cheese at the Lactos Cheese Factory before heading south to drink some award winning whisky at Hellyer’s Road Whiskey Distillery before spending the night in Devonport.
Day 5
Devonport to Launceston
Another 100 mile drive today as you complete your Food and Wine tour around Tasmania. Travel south and pick up some handmade chocolates from House of Anvers, located just outside Latrobe. Then continue on to Elizabeth Town, stopping for a bite at Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and taste some artisan cheese at Ashgrove Cheese. On your way back to Launceston, stop in at the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company at Evandale for some treats to take home. Your car is booked until tomorrow and should be returned to the airport or city by the same time as it was picked up on the first day.
