Overview
Japan is a truly timeless country, a place where ancient traditions are fused with modern life as if it were the most natural thing in the world. On the surface, Japan appears exceedingly modern, but travelling around it offers lots of chances to connect with the traditional culture. Whatever time of the year you visit, Japan has the power to enthral even the most jaded traveller and on this eight day self guided tour you will discover just why.
Day 1
Arrive Tokyo
On arrival at Tokyo’s international airport you will be met by one of our experienced tour representatives who will be waiting to assist with transportation into the city, helping you to board the right train or find the appropriate shuttle van. After reaching the hotel and checking in, the remainder of the day is free for you to go out and explore on your own and try one of the local restaurants for your first taste of Japanese food.

Day 2
Tokyo
Meet your guide at the hotel and leave for Hamarikyu, a Japanese garden that once served as a private villa of a powerful feudal lord. Its wide collection of flowers and teahouse make it one of the most visited gardens in Tokyo. From here take a scenic river cruise to Asakusa, a part of Tokyo’s old town and to Senso-ji, the city's oldest Buddhist temple. The surrounding streets feature many traditional shops and are a delight. The tour ends with a visit to the famous shrine of Meiji Jingu.

Day 3
Tokyo
Today’s guided tour starts at Sasazuka Station, where you go to the cycling studio for a bicycle and helmet fitting. On the way, listen to stories and entertaining anecdotes about the neighbourhood. Then begin a cycling tour visiting different locations depending on the time of year. There will be cultural and architectural stops where the guide will share interesting information and allow time for photos. Later join the rest of the group for a local meal such as gyoza (pan-fried dumplings).

Day 4
Tokyo
Enjoy a self-guided day when you can explore the city and its outlying areas. Visit the electronics district of Akihabara or discover some of Tokyo’s world-class museums and art galleries. Alternatively, take a day trip outside the city to Kamakura. One of Japan’s former capitals, Kamakura is a delightful seaside town home to many ancient shrines, temples, and other structures such as the Daibutsu, a giant bronze Buddha that stands 13-meters tall.

Day 5
Tokyo to Hakone
Another self-guided day. Travel by train to Hakone, a popular hot spring destination from Tokyo frequented by most tourists who wish to get a sight of Mt. Fuji. In Hakone, experience a stay in a ryokan, a classic Japanese-style inn furnished with futon beds, tatami flooring, paper sliding doors, and hot spring baths. Enjoy a traditional multi-course meal for dinner, which usually includes small servings of sushi, sashimi, and tempura.

Day 6
Hakone
Spend the whole day exploring Hakone with an included pass, which serves as a ticket to the numerous forms of transport in the area. Take the Hakone Tozan switchback train that zigzags through the mountains and offers views of the surrounding valleys. Afterwards, ride the Guinness World Record-holder ropeway all the way up to Mt. Owakudani, passing over sulfurous fumes and hot springs. Hakone is also home to many museums and parks.
