Located on the volcanic atoll of Aitutaki; one of the largest in the Cook Islands, the boutique Etu Moana is situated amid beautiful rolling hills beside a large clear turquoise lagoon, enclosed with a surf-topped coral reef and tiny sandy cay islets. Meaning ‘blue starfish’ in Maori, Etu Moana is run by friendly Aitutakian locals who offer a plethora of relaxed, low-key activities, from snorkelling and kayaking in the protected lagoon to visiting the island’s ancient sacred sites.
Etu Moana offers ten modern and spacious Polynesian style villas with thatched roofs and large covered verandas. Each villa offers spectacular views overlooking the turquoise lagoon and the ocean, while hardwood floors, exposed timbers, teak furniture and local art create a very exclusive and romantic atmosphere. Each villa has a king-size bed, ceiling fan, air-conditioning, phone and flat-screen TV with in-house movies. There is also a fully-equipped kitchen.
Most activities are centred on the beautiful, protected lagoon. Snorkel among schools of colourful butterfly fish in the crystal blue water, take a cruise around the lagoon and stop over at the many uninhabited islands, or paddle around in a kayak. The resort offers complimentary kayaks, snorkel gear and bicycles, while cars and motorbike rentals are available on request and can be arranged to be delivered. When the sun has set over the warm waters of the South Pacific, enjoy themed island nights with traditional dancing and singing. There is also a private pool surrounded by volcanic rocks and gardens, with an inviting pool deck, where guests can enjoy the complimentary breakfast or refreshments at the self-serve honesty bar.
While the private villas offer self-catering facilities, a complimentary daily breakfast is served at the pool side and the friendly staff are very helpful in recommending great restaurants.
