Amid lush beachside gardens, close to the city’s business district, you’ll find the 5-star Skycity Darwin, in Australia’s Top End. The resort overlooks a man-made heated lagoon, with over 100,000 plants in place, creating a real tropical paradise. On top of that there’s a stunning white sand beach – the sand was specially imported from Queensland – and a large casino. The hotel can arrange transport to and from Darwin international and domestic airlines; if you’re driving from Berrimah train station, it’s about 20km along the Stuart Highway.
The Lagoon Day Spa, set among the verdant tropical gardens, is a tranquil haven offering a range of treatments and therapies to help you feel good. There are eight treatment rooms, private courtyards, relaxation spaces and outside bathing areas to aid your journey to inner harmony. Treatments include Swedish, deep-tissue and remedial massages, and thermal infusion, marine mineral and age smart facials.
A nine-hole course is adjacent to the site, which guests are welcome to use (no fee).
Facilities are as you’d expect from such a classy establishment, and all of the 32 rooms have a private balcony, free wifi, flatscreen TV, iPod docking station, pillow menu, minibar and tea- and coffee-making facilities. You can choose from deluxe rooms, superior spa rooms (which have a Japanese-style spa bath), lagoon and lagoon superior rooms, one-bedroom suites (with and without ocean views), a grand suite and, the ultimate, garden grand suite.
You may want to divide your time between the impressive lagoon-style infinity pool and the beach, which you can access directly from the hotel. Tennis fans can play a match on the adjacent court, or you can hire a bicycle from the hotel to explore the area. There are also splendid jogging and walking tracks alongside the beach, making exercise a pleasure. And if you’re feeling lucky, you can try your hand at the 24-hour casino, which has over 750 electronic machines as well as table games such as baccarat and roulette (from 12 noon).
Guests have a choice of five restaurants, to suit all tastes and moods. There’s fine dining at EVOO, Australian seafood and other local dishes at Cove, modern Italian at Il Piatto, Asian fusion at Dragon Court and ocean-front dining at Sunset Restaurant. There are just as many options for drinks – cocktails at Sandbar, sports at KBar, poolside tippling at Terrace Bar, Darwin’s only swim-up bar at Lagoon and relaxed sipping at 8 Bar.
