A collection of stylish accommodation built around a 7ha resort that includes lush gardens and a pool, the Bluewater Maribago is set on the eastern fringes of Cebu, an island in the Philippines. This area of outstanding beauty brings together the best elements of beach and spa, casting you far away from city life. Cebu has its own airport, within easy reach, and away from your luxury cocoon you’ll find plenty of local culture and stunning areas of coast to explore.
Amuma Spa shows off the best in Filipino therapeutic and healing traditions, and uses local ingredients as part of its treatments. One of the most popular pampering options is the hilot, a full-body massage that includes warm banana fronds used to loosen tense muscles, and native rituals such as pausok (space cleansing through medicinal herbs and mineral smoke), and orasyon (blessings, chants and spiritual invocations). There’s a juice bar for refreshing drinks and snacks, while a fully equipped gym and tai-chi pavilion are on-site too.
The warm and welcoming rooms here are every bit contemporary, while also making use of traditional Filipino materials and motifs. In deluxe rooms, light flows in from the veranda, where you can sit and admire the tropical greenery or a blissful seascape. Spa suites will treat you to an alfresco shower and bath; while the Royal Bungalows are based right on the beach, with large doors that open up to let in the views and soothing sound of the sea.
The ocean is always close at hand here, and the resort features saltwater lagoons filled with tropical fish, with feeding taking place daily at 4pm. An aqua sports facility also provides jet-skiing, scuba-diving, snorkelling and island-hopping experiences. If you just want to stretch out on the beach, you’ll be spoilt by 110m of clean white sand surrounded by golden coconut palms, and there are three sculpted pools to splash into too. Music nights will keep you entertained, while the on-site gallery showcases Filipino artists and holds its own art workshops.
Enjoy an alfresco meal by the pool at Allegro Restaurant, with its selection of Filipino, Asian and continental cuisines. Buffet and à la carte menus are on offer, alongside a variety of themed dinners throughout the week. The Cove is a seafood restaurant overlooking the resort’s private island and offers the freshest catch. Step up to the live aquariums, pick your dinner and have it prepared to your liking. Seafood lovers will also want to try the oyster bar, serving the fresh crustaceans and cool cocktails. For a slice of Italy, Molto Italiano serves up pizzas from a brick oven as well as salads and pastas.
