Once a coconut-and-clove plantation house, Edwardian Clove Hall is a luxe boutique getaway on a quiet street just outside Georgetown, the capital of the Malaysian island of Penang. Oozing colonial-era style, its tranquil verandahs and courtyards with planters chairs and wrought-iron lanterns, and its fragrant gardens of frangipani and clove tree groves, make this a serene and sensuous place to stay.
Manicure/pedicure and hairdressing services are available, as well as yoga classes, and you can opt to have a massage either in your own suite or beside the pool.
Clove Hall’s six individual suites – named Cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom, Star Anise, Saffron and Clove – are packed with character, with wooden floors, antique writing desks and mosquito nets hanging from the four-poster beds. Three of the suites are situated in the main house, while the others are individual villas with private verandahs dotted around the gardens.
There’s a beautiful pool at Clove Hall where you can take a dip surrounded by the lush tropical gardens, or you can simply unwind with a book on your private terrace. Beyond this quiet enclave, Georgetown is fascinating place of mixed cultures, with Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and European influences seen everywhere, from the vibrant markets to the street-food stalls, and the hotel can organise guided tours to show you the sights.
There is no restaurant at Clove Hall, but breakfast and afternoon tea are provided, and there are plenty of places to eat nearby.
