5 best restaurants in Atlanta
Our favourite places to eat. Enjoy awesome food and stunning decor.
The Optimist
Old-school fish house
Fish and chips may no longer be the UK’s national dish but it’s found a new home in this seafood emporium. Sleek white tiles and floor-to-ceiling windows give the vast space an air of ocean chic.
Other than the afore-mentioned classic (served with malt vinegar aioli), our recommendations are the clam and lobster rolls as well as the Georgia shrimps in chile-lime sauce.
Also, if you have to wait for a table, there’s a putting green outside to practice your game!

Eat, drink and be merry
Don’t let the mustard-coloured concrete block walls phase you. This is a culinary classic - and probably Atlanta’s best. Its four-course prix fixe, with seasonal, local ingredients, is a sure-fire win. We loved the foie gras with peach, honey and brioche and the rainbow trout was moist and perfectly cooked. There’s also an all-budgets drinks menu, and each course comes with a by-the-glass wine pairing suggestion. Cheers for that!

Restaurant Eugene
Well done, Gene
What’s in a name? The “Tasting of Seasonal Vegetables” may sound normal – but don’t let that fool you. It’s a delicious mix of freshly-harvested veggies that ranges from glazed carrots to fried lily blossoms. That’s just one dish which shows off the quiet, yet revolutionary talent of this restaurant’s kitchen. Another genius dish is crawfish with crisp nuggets of sweetbread. Add friendly, personable service, colourful flower surrounds and wonder-kid cocktails. Five stars, Eugene.

Miller Union
When in the South…
Do as the Georgians do and enjoy Southern hospitality at its best. This traditional restaurant serves up grand old dishes like grilled pork loin with simmered field peas and green tomato salsa. If you’re lucky enough to visit on the third Thursday every month, enjoy the harvest dinners, like ham two ways with buttermilk biscuits and bowls of fresh veg. Peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream rounds off the night. And don’t leave without sampling the vast Southern whiskey selection!

Italian intimacy
The lasagne many be deliberately untidy but there’s no denying its more-ish taste. This bella of a restaurant is Atlanta’s favourite Italian, serving up exquisite Mediterranean cuisine like a delightful branzino, filleted tableside with a sure hand and paired with crackly potatoes and garlicky spinach. The atmosphere is buzzing, with honeyed lighting casting a sweet glow over food and diners alike. Drink of the night is the Negroni - a cocktail of gin, Campari and vermouth.
