A date with nature

This is a full day trip from Wellington to one of New Zealand's most revered nature reserves. Kapiti Island is home to an internationally famed reserve protecting some of the world's rarest and most endangered birds. After driving around Wellington's beautiful harbour and on to the coast, you take a 10 minute ferry trip to Kapiti Island, passing through a marine reserve.

Once on the island, you are guided along the bush trails and coastal tracks among rare native birds and bush. Lunch is at the remote Kapiti Nature Lodge, before having time to explore the lowlands of the Waiorua Valley. The return ferry trip leaves from nearby the lodge, and takes you back to the mainland. You are picked up from your accommodation and taken to the Wellington Information Centre, the departure point of your morning or afternoon tour. Then join your guide to begin a Lord of the Rings Half Day trip around the Wellington region exploring the film locations and pass the Embassy Movie theatre that held the world premier of Return of the King where 100,000 people gathered to watch.

Then it's up to Mt Victoria. After a quick stop at the lookout, your guide will drive down to the 'Green Belt'. Here you will walk through the forest to stand where the actors stood while filming. Next stop is the Weta Cave and Workshop Exhibition for a guided tour of the prop-making and make-up side of Weta Studios.
