Penguin perfection

While staying in the very Scottish town of Dunedin, on New Zealand's beautiful South Island, it is well worth taking this memorable tour during which you can get up close to these loveable creatures. You begin with a short talk outlining the issues Yellow Eyed Penguins are facing, their life cycle and how the project to protect and care for them is carried out.

A short bus trip over the farm then takes small groups on to the reserve where your guide will lead you on foot through a unique system of covered trenches into viewing hides, allowing access to the living areas and breeding grounds of this shy penguin, providing the opportunity to see and photograph undisturbed activity at close range. You gain first hand information of these wonderful birds from distances down to less than a metre.

Steam off to the gorge

Join your Taieri Gorge Railway train at the Dunedin Railway Station to begin your half day journey from this very Scottish town through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge to Pukerangi and back again. The vintage steam train travels across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels which were carved by hand more than 100 years ago.

With a full commentary, photographic stops and on-board refreshments the train offers year round, all-weather entertainment. If you have more time, you can also take a full day trip to the gorge. And before you leave, or when you return, look around the railway station itself which is famous for its colourful tiles and architecture. There is lots to see and do when staying in Dunedin, but this trip is worth taking and will leave you with great memories.
