Flower Culture & Mountain Village

Parade of flowers

The cultivation of cut flowers for export is an important industry in Colombia and one of the main centres is in the cooler climate of the mountains surrounding Medellín. Santa Helena is a small flower growing village less than one hour from Bogota and where cut flowers are woven into tapestries which are then mounted onto wooden frames which the locals carry on their backs in parades through the streets

After visiting Santa Helena enjoy a guided tour through this beautiful countryside dotted with attractive villages and towns is a must before returning to Medellín. On the day of a parade you have reserved seats along the route from where you can watch this pageant of colour, music and human endeavour as more than 1,000 silleteros. as they are called, walk through the streets carrying their cumbersome but beautifully crafted creations.
