5 hottest bars in Rio de Janeiro

Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark

Arty, edgy bar for arty, thirsty people

1. Bar Teto Solar

Arty, edgy bar for arty, thirsty people

Our all-time favourite bar

The bar at the Solar Theatre has always been a famously arty haunt, and now, in its new guise, even more so. It’s kept its edgy air, so expect to see a VW Beetle sticking out of the wall high above the main bar (we’re not sure who crashed it there), but don’t worry, you’ll be too busy enjoying four different draught, over 40 bottled international beers and a supremely satisfying house Pilsner to worry.

Neighbourhood locals don’t get better

2. Armazém São Thiago

Neighbourhood locals don’t get better

Known to locals as Bar do Gomez, this rough and ready boteco is perfect, set on a picturesque cobbled street in Santa Teresa. It boasts vaulted ceilings, ancient photos (it was founded in 1919 as a Spanish grocery store) and an atmosphere that’s friendly, authentic and local. There are tasty bar snacks, which you’ll want to wash down liberally with a few great chopps and over sixty types of cachaça. If you lived in Rio, this would be your local.

Home of Rio's favourite drink

3. Jobi

Home of Rio's favourite drink

Rio’s beer of choice is chopp, a light, refreshing draught served in a tall glass with a creamy head. And Jobi, a Rio mainstay since 1956, is well-known for pouring the best damn chopp in town. With 10,000 glasses sold every week, expect crowds overflowing like the creamy beer you’ll be drinking. And as it’s only two blocks from trendy Leblon beach, you can stop by on the way home – or go for a dip after! Just make sure you soak up the chopp with Jobi’s delicious empanadas!

Beer, beer and more beer!

4. Beerjack HideOut

Beer, beer and more beer!

When you’ve drunk your fill of chopp draught, know that there’s a trendy spot in Rio dedicated to expensive, imported beer! You won’t be alone. BeerJack HideOut has become super popular with the locals, especially the burgeoning ale-lovers. Offering over 180 different beers, these guys take the amber liquid very seriously! You can even enjoy tasting evenings that end up in glass-clinking bonhomie! Now, that’s true beer- swilling style.

5. Bar Brasil

Way back in 1907, a bar opened. In the century plus that it’s been pouring drinks for people from all over the world, it’s seen some changes. According to legend, it was even called Bar Adolf prior to WW2! Today, it’s at the heart of the resurgence of the great Rio district of Lapa. Yet, even now, you’ll still enjoy a taste of what the city was like decades ago, with ancient wooden fridges, waiters in bowties and limitless beer on tap. Fortunately, some things just don’t change!

Avenida Mem de Sá, 90, Lapa   Tel: +55 21 2509 5943
