5 best restaurants in Mauritius

Our favourite places to eat. Enjoy awesome food and stunning decor

1 Amigo

For fantastic fish dishes

Located on the island’s northern tip, Amigo is easy to fall in love with – rustically set on the first floor of an ordinary house behind the township near the cane farms, it has a friendly feel and customers’ reviews handwritten on the walls. The tables have been kept clear for guests to sample seafood specialities like 3kg lobster, mussels and prawns, as well as the traditional rhum drink and banana flambé. A simple mainstay of Mauritius where you can leave your thoughts on the wall...

2 Palais de Barbizon

Home-cooked heaven

It’s not just delicious local dishes that draw visitors here. It’s the traditional Mauritian atmosphere, the welcoming hosts and the distinct setting. Located in the southern hills, its owner offers a daily changing set menu of old family recipes of chicken or fish with vegetables and rice, followed by dessert. All are prepared by his wife and served by his sister-in-law in a simple restaurant decorated by a colourful mural. Child-friendly yet romantic, it offers great value for money, too.

3 Domaine Anna

Chic Chinese

Receiving rave reviews, Domaine Anna is set in sensational surroundings that scream romance. As you approach the driveway you’re greeted by torchlight, then you’ll dine in a private gazebo on a lake flanked by lush gardens. As well as its palatial ambience, the restaurant is characterised by live music and dancing at weekends, not to mention the fantastic food – much of which is grown on the estate. Dine with a largely Chinese clientele and know that this is the nation’s cuisine at its best.

4 Indian Pavilion

Hotel haute cuisine

Open your senses to the Indian Pavilion, with its ever-changing Tasting Menu and fine a la carte selection. Classic Indian dishes are magically interpreted by Vineet Bhatia, who also owns a Michelin-starred restaurant in Chelsea, wowing you with intense flavours in tender meats and succulent seafood. Views of the mountainside sugarcanes and a private lagoon within the Le Saint Géran Resort make this an atmospheric, adult venue that puts you at ease as you sip wine perfectly paired to your meal.

5 Le Château de Bel Ombre

Step back in time

Set in the island’s stunning south, Le Château de Bel Ombre is a beautifully restored 19th-century colonial mansion with a really elegant feel. Candlelight and silver service give it an exclusive ambience, while the à la carte fusion menu features dishes like pheasant terrine with tamarind confit. Saturday is traditional Mauritian night, when you can sample a host of authentic island dishes. Be sure to book a balcony table for memorable views of the sugar fields and the sea.
