IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HEROES

The story of Chittorgarh is a saga of valour, tenacity and sacrifice - it was sacked three times and its brave defenders were killed fighting a superior enemy. On this full day trip from Udaipur you travel the 100 miles to Chittorgarh where the main tourist attraction is the fort, which stands on a steep hill. A zigzag climb through seven gates leads you to its main western gate or Ramol.

On the way up you pass memorials marking the spots where the defenders fell during the siege of 1568. During your visit here you also see the cellars, the archeological museum, the Singa Chowri Temple and the Fateh Prakash Palace and Museum as well as the adjacent Rana Kumbha Palace and the Victory Tower, which is one of the most popular spots with tourists.

It's a 50 mile drive from the city and on arrival you have a guided tour of this unconquerable fortress, which is surrounded by 13 magnificent peaks of the Aravali mountain ranges, and learn all about its fascinating history.

The fortress was built in the 15th century by Maharana Rana Kumbha and stands on the top of a ridge. See the city highlights

While visiting colourful Udaipur it is well worth taking this half day city tour seeing all the main sights. First you are taken to the City Palace, standing on the east bank of Lake Pichola. This complex is a massive series of palaces built at different times from 1559. The balconies of the palace provide panoramic views of the Lake Palace Hotel and Jag Mandir on one side, and the city of Udaipur on the other.

The paintings, mosaics, intricately carved 'chhatris' and the architecturally brilliant facade all contribute to making this a truly memorable experience. You also visit the Jagdish Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which comprises beautifully carved pillars, decorated ceilings, painted walls and lush halls. Later visit a picturesque garden, Sahelion ki Bari, before enjoying a boat ride on Lake Pichola.
