You travel to Sao Vicente on the north of the island to see the volcanic caves and the Volcanism Centre where you can learn all about the origin of the island. The caves of Sao Vicente were formed by an eruption 890,000 years ago at Pal da Serra. As the lava came down to the sea the outer portion was exposed to lower temperatures and solidified rapidly while inside creating a series of lava tubes that formed the caves.

This set of eight volcanic tunnels is the largest known cave system on Madeira and were discovered in 1885 and were the first ones open to the public in Portugal. The tour ends at the volcanism centre where you learn lots of facts and figures about volcanoes. While there you see a spectacular reflecting pool of water and are also transported in a shaking lift to the centre of the earth where a 3D film shows the eruption.
