Animal adventures

Scattered like daubs of green and silver paint on an artist’s palette, the Bahamas are ready-made for exploration. Just ask Christopher Columbus – he bumped into these limestone landscapes in 1492 and changed the course of history. From pirates and blockade dodgers to rum smugglers, the jet set has converged and caroused on the country’s 700 islands and 2,400 cays for centuries.

But today there is no place on the Bahamas quite like ARDASTRA. This five and a half acres of lush tropical gardens is home to more than 300 animals and while there you'll meet many favourites including the world famous Marching Flamingos as they put on their spectacular show. This zoo visit is a treat for all the family.

Hover above the volcano

Fly to the Volcano stricken island of Montserrat and see the devastation firsthand. This is one of Antigua's most popular tours and you will fly direct to the East Coast of Montserrat. The entire flying tour of the island is over the “exclusion zone”, which is an area that has been designated off limits to habitation or ground transportation, so the best way to see the volcano is by helicopter.

At the centre of the exclusion zone is the Soufriere Hills Volcano, rising to 3,000 feet above sea level, still active and frequently emitting a combination of ash, smoke and steam. One thousand feet below is the massive Tar River Gorge and Delta, which has formed over the past six years as a result of avalanches of hot gas, rock, and ash dust, known as pyroclastic flows. This adventure could well be the highlight of your holiday.

46 Hoverboard
Hoverboard

BE A HUMAN HOVERCRAFT

Considered the sister product of the flyboard, the aquatic hover board also takes advantage of water jets that blast the rider into the air. The only difference is that the participant “rides” along it skateboard-style, doing spins and grabs as well as skimming along the surface of the water. The cool looking boards have a top speed of 16mph and can “fly” 16ft above the water . . . so what are you waiting for?

You can try out this new craze while staying on St Barts. The boards echo Marty Mcfly’s much envied hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II and thrill seekers will be jumping at the chance to test out this real aquatic counterpart to the flyboard. There is lots to see and do while staying on the beautiful Caribbean island of St Barts, and the hoverboard is certainly one activity to try.
