5 best restaurants in Koh Samui

Our favourite places to eat. Enjoy awesome food and stunning decor

1 9Gems Lounge and Restaurant

Where style is on the menu

We’ve got designs on this classy restaurant located on the hillside leading out of Chaweng. Minimalist and luxurious, with an exclusive feel, the clientele here are not hard up. Taster menus are the best way to experience the diversity of the menu, featuring up to seven courses of anything from duck breast to tempura prawns. Food is presented in line with the stunning surroundings – like a work of art – and the 36-label wine list only adds the refined feel of this super-stylish venue.

2 Tom Yam Thai

A regal affair

Chaweng Beach is littered with wonderful restaurants serving worldwide cuisine, but nothing beats traditional Thai. Delicious food, a friendly feel and great value are all on the menu at Tom Yam Thai. With its colour scheme of purple and gold, it has a regal air and is unique in its split-level building with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bay. With specialities such as pork spare ribs in coconut milk and whole deep-fried grouper, an experience you won’t forget.

3 Dining on the Rocks

Six courses above the sea

Set within the secluded Six Senses Hideaway Samui resort, Dining on the Rocks is the island’s ultimate evening experience. Perched upon nine verandas of weathered teak and bamboo over the gulf, you’ll feel like you’re dining suspended in the stars. A six-course fixed-price menu changes with the inspiration of the chefs to include unique ‘New Asian’ and ‘modern interpretive’ cuisine and fine wines. For unmatched romance, book table 99 and dine on your own private terrace.

4 Zico’s

Bringing Brazil to Samui

Step away from Thai style for a night and head to Koh Samui’s famous Brazilian restaurant for a spectacular show. Mouth-watering meals, great entertainment and tempting cocktails combine for a meat-lover’s dream, with sword-like skewers of the finest cuts of barbecued meat being brought to your table. After an all-you-can-eat feast accompanied by samba dancers, DJs and percussionists, there are few places on the island that can match a night at Zico’s.

5 Hua Thanon Market

Traditional Thai – to go

Live like the locals and head to Hua Thanon Market, in a Muslim village just south of Lamai, and feast your eyes upon Thai delicacies, from freshly butchered meat to just-caught squid and bundles of vegetables. A row of food shops sell ready-to-go meals not to be missed – awaken your senses with chicken biryani and red-hot curries or toasted coconut rice flavoured with lemongrass and dried shrimp, and soak up true Thai culture.

4 hottest bars in Koh Samui

Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark

1 Moulin Rouge

Hello boys!

A trip to Thailand wouldn’t be complete without meeting a ladyboy or two, and Samui’s Moulin Rouge cabaret bar is the place to do it. Featuring three nightly shows with some 20 performers strutting their stuff in glitzy get-up, the earliest show is tailored to families, while things heat up later on. Free entry, fun frolics and friendly dancers make for an exciting, great-value extravaganza.

2 Moon parties

The sun goes down, the stars come out…

Want a night out to end all nights out? Koh Samui and its surrounding islands are infamous for their Moon parties. For the Full Moon version, head to Koh Phangan’s Haad Rin Nok Beach, just a short (and frequent) boat ride from Samui, where more than 12 powerful sound systems burst beats out to as many as 30,000 partygoers. Koh Samui itself holds Black Moon Parties in various locations, such as Samrong Bay and Chaweng beach.

3 Green Mango

A fruity all-nighter

So good it has a whole soi (that’s a street to us) named after it, the Green Mango Club is Koh Samui’s biggest and best drinking venue, set in a huge, hard-to-miss open-air warehouse. Begin the night with hip hop and pop music, then move further into the blazing lights of this iconic treehouse for pumping house and techno. Drinks can be pricey, the music is always loud and you’re sure to have a night to remember.

4 Lava Lounge

Fuelling the fire

When you need a night off from banging beats, Lava Lounge is the only place to go for a simple, relaxing evening spent sipping cool creations and catching up. No bar girls, no sweaty dancers, just great tunes, friendly faces, comfy seating and a list of 40 of the best cocktails around. Centrally located on Lamai Beach and dotted with mesmerising lava lamps, it’s one of the most relaxed venues you’ll find on Koh Samui.
