Whale watching and fine wines

August to November is usually the best time to see the Southern Right Whale in the waters around Cape Town and Walker Bay at Hermanus is an ideal place for whale watching. These mammals, which often come as close as 50 meters from the shore, are given to displays of breaching, lobtailing, spyhopping and courtship rituals, and today you may see them all.

Leave Cape Town via Elgin, which is the heart of the apple industry, en route to Hermanus, stopping at the Old Harbour Museum. Then travel to the Hamilton Russell Vineyards established in 1981 when he selected the most suitable and southerly vineyards in the Cape to produce the country's top cool climate wines. Then take a scenic drive to Kleinmond, for a visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens.
