Five-star Russell Cottages are a collection of pretty clapboard buildings with shady verandahs and picture windows, located in the heart of the historic town of Russell in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. Russell is a picturesque seaside town with pretty churches, artisan craft stores and galleries showing local art.
The 15 separate cottages all have between one and four bedrooms, living rooms, kitchen/diners, gas log fires, outdoor space and balconies. The furnishings are crisp, contemporary and comfortable, with warm-wood furniture, sleek stainless-steel appliances in the kitchens, and heavy drapes at the windows and French doors.
The heated pool at Russell Cottages is open in the warmer months, while Russell itself has plenty to enjoy, including a fascinating museum and a chocolate factory. You can also head out on plenty of excursions and experiences from Russell, whether it’s a walk through ancient forest, an island-hopping boat trip or a surfing lesson. The Bay of Islands area is also rich in Maori history, as it’s home to many sacred sites, as well as the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where you can learn about Maori culture.
All of the cottages have fully equipped kitchens, plus there’s a wide array of cafes and restaurants right on your doorstep. The poolside barbecue area is available to everyone – via booking – where you can cook up a feast using the provided tongs, cutlery and ice machine, and eat alfresco by the pool. A breakfast hamper can be provided if you require, and there are lots of places to shop for provisions in Russell.
