General

This luxury hotel – once the home of one of the Swihili Empire’s richest men – sits in the centre of historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the west coast of Unguja. Benefitting from a recent renovation, it has the distinction of being the second tallest building in the area – which means you get fantastic views. The airport is a 15–20 minute drive away.

Room Description

The hotel has been likened to something out of the Arabian Nights, with original antique fittings throughout. Guests can choose from 24 rooms, all done out in traditional Zanzibarian style, but with all the home comforts you’d expect in somewhere so palatial: large beds, netting, ceiling fans or air-conditioning. Most have large stone baths to sink back into, while the sultan rooms boast 20ft ceilings, hand-painted glass features and carved doors.

Activities

Stone Town has a unique history and much of it is well preserved – it was once an important point on the spice- and slave-trading routes. Some of its most famous sites include the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Forodhani Gardens, the Palace Museum, the Aga Khan Mosque and David Livingstone’s House. A visit to Darajani Market, an exciting maze of stalls, is also a must. A short boat trip will take you to Prison Island, once the site of a compound for rebellious slaves and now home to giant tortoises.

Dining

Right at the top of the hotel is the appropriately named Tower Top Restaurant. Open at the sides and Arabian in feel, the views are outstanding – its romantic setting makes it a popular spot for people popping the question. The menu may include local dishes such as fatoush salad or a range of seafood options.
