In bed with the stars

A hotel's star rating these days isn't always about the facilities. More who owns it. And some big names are open for business. Olivia Walmsley checks in.

Sheer luxury in the jungle of Belize

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA

The famed director owns three hotels - Blancaneaux Lodge in the jungles of Belize, Turtle Inn on the coast and La Lancha in Guatemala.

Coppola bought Blancaneaux in 1981 because it reminded him of the jungle setting of Apocalypse Now. But don’t worry: there’s no smell of napalm in the morning.

In fact, it’s all rather luxurious. Blancaneaux is frequented by Hollywood types – Charlize Theron has frolicked in one of its crystal-clear rock pools – and the 24 thatched bungalows have mahogany floors and hammocks strung across the decks. Coppola stays at the lodge regularly and even cooks there sometimes.

If you should happen to find the whirring of the fan in the bar ominously familiar, that will be because the same rotating blades accompanied Martin Sheen’s breakdown in the opening sequence of Apocalypse Now.

Enjoy 3 nights at the 5 star Blancaneaux Lodge followed by 4 nights at the 5 star Turtle Inn on the coast. Includes breakfast at the Turtle Inn, flights with American Airlines and all transfers.

ROBERT REDFORD

The Sundance Resort covers 6,000 acres of beautiful wilderness in Provo Canyon, at the base of Mount Timpanogos.

After buying two acres and building his ranch, Redford bought another massive tract, and built the resort. Guests come to enjoy the outdoor life including some of the U.S.’s best skiing, horseriding, mountain biking, fishing, outdoor theatre and concerts.

Sundance hosts regular filmmaking workshops, so don’t be surprised to see directors and actors schmoozing on the steps.

The annual Sundance Film Festival is a magnet for independent film-makers.

Make your stay in Monterey

CLINT EASTWOOD

Clint bought the Mission Ranch Resort in 1986, saving it from developers. Clint was stationed with the Army at Fort Ord in Monterey in the Fifties when the Mission, with its restaurant and dance barn, was the place to be. For old times’ sake, he has kept the two ‘party barns’ for good ol’ ranch-style hoedowns.

The guest cottages enjoy sweeping views of meadows, grazing sheep and the ocean. The decor is a mix of antiques and ranch-style furniture.

The cutesy honeymoon cottage, with its rock chimney and white arbour, was the location for the 1959 Sandra Dee film, A Summer Place.

Move over darling and head for California

DORIS DAY

The Mediterranean-style Cypress Inn offers Fifties movie nostalgia, with vintage movie posters on the walls – and DD tunes while you browse the website.

The historic, Mission-style landmark dates back to the Twenties and reflects the actress’s animal activism with pet-friendly policies - dog biscuits are available at the front desk. As Doris likes to say: ‘This is an inn that caters to pets and puts up with people.’

But even Doris drew the line when Kim Novak dropped in with her pet llama, Lulu.

Enjoy 7 nights in the heart of Carmel-by-Sea at the inviting Cypress Inn. We include continental breakfast, flights with American Airlines and car hire for you to get out and about.

The style leader in Stockholm

BENNY ANDERSSON

The former Abba star owns the Rival in the Swedish capital. Sadly for Abba fans, it’s not a themed homage to Seventies kitsch, but a tasteful boutique hotel. The 99-room Rival is in Sodermalm, one of Stockholm’s hippest neighbourhoods.

The hotel’s interiors have an Art Deco feel and each room is decorated with a scene from a classic Swedish film – there’s a lot of Greta Garbo, as might be expected. Check out the Rival Cinema, restored to its former glory.

For a history lesson in Swedish film making, enjoy 3 nights at this glamorous boutique hotel in Stockholm. Includes breakfast and flights with British Airways.
