February half-term offers the widest choice of holiday options for families. Falling during one of the UK’s most depressing months of the year, it’s an opportunity for parents feeling the need for a sun-bed and cocktail to whist their kids off to the sun, or alternatively, hit the slopes on a ski break – literally anything is possible!
If you have kids who would rather sit and play the PlayStation than venture outside, now is the time to reintroduce them to the joys of fresh air. Head north to Iceland and take in scenery that will make even teenage minds boggle! Enjoy jeep expeditions in the snow and ice, volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, geysers and of course, the inviting Blue Lagoon.
Another way to lure older children and teens into the idea of the ‘family holiday’ is to offer them the chance to learn a cool sport like surfing. February is the season for waves all the way up the Atlantic coast, from Morocco to France. Alternatively, for those wanting both sun and surf, Bali is a far-flung, family-friendly holiday destination that’s super-hot in February and offers guaranteed year-round waves.
In addition, cycling is becoming increasingly popular at the moment, so why not suggest a family holiday on two wheels? Cycling keeps kids busy and tires them out enough that come bedtime, they might just do as they’re told and leave mum and dad in peace! Try mountainous, cycling-mad destinations like Mallorca or even St Lucia for the best scenic trails.
For those who like aquatic life, there are so many destinations to choose from to get your feet (and much more) wet; Egypt is great if you’re a family of snorkellers, offering amazing, easily accessible coral reef in the warm waters surrounding Sharm El Sheikh. However, if slides and shoots are more your thing, then everywhere from Tenerife to Orlando, Florida offer great waterparks.
