Istanbul has been crowned European Best Destination 2013 in an e-tourism event held by the European Consumers Choice. The city came out on top in the European e-tourism event which gives European citizens the opportunity to vote for which city they feel should win the Best European Destination title.
This year is the first time the Turkish city has entered the competition and it has become the first city to win the title upon its first year of entering. It is reported that several thousand people voted for their favourite city in Europe, placing Istanbul on top, closely followed by Lisbon, which came in second and Vienna, which came in third.
Two Spanish cities managed to get a spot on the top 10 list with Barcelona coming in fourth and Madrid coming in sixth. Also included in the top ten were, Amsterdam in fifth and Valletta, Nice, Milan and Stockholm in the bottom four respectively.
The European Best Destination event is a non-profit scheme from the European Consumer Choice which aims to promote culture and tourism in Europe. This year was the events largest yet with a record number of people voting for their favourite European city, as well as a record number of followers, video views and articles written, making it the largest e-tourism event in Europe.
Previous winners of the title have included Lisbon in 2010, Copenhagen in 2011 and Porto in 2012. This year’s winner has been chosen because of the many cultural sites Istanbul has to offer. The Turkish capital is the only city in the world to cover two continents and is rich in historical landmarks and exciting activities attracting more and more tourists to the city each year.
