Endangered Animal Watch

The Empire State Building took on a very new look this weekend to highlight a growing issue even bigger than the building itself. As the night sky drew over New York, it's most famous landmark took on the persona of some of the world's most endangered animals, with 40 projectors lighting up the building's face. Organised by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of upcoming documentary "Racing Extinction", the spectacle served to raise awareness of the continued threat to many beloved species and was sparked by the tragic killing of Cecil the Lion. With this in mind, we bring you some of the destinations where you can see some of these species for yourself and perhaps help them a little too.

Giant Panda - Chengdu, China

Pandas

The Giant Panda is one of the most renowned endangered species in the world, with a number of conservation sites being founded to help promote breeding and boost numbers. Over recent years, the Chengdu Research Base has continued to improve it's tourist facilities to provide a truly entrancing, educational experience. Strict regulations are put in place to ensure that the Pandas are disturbed as little as possible, whilst leaving visitors with a strong awareness and a focus for Great Panda and wildlife conservation.

Big 5 on Safari - South Africa, Africa

safari

A host of animals found on safari are under constant threat from hunters and poachers alike, stressing the importance of game reserves and the surveillance protection of the wild in Africa. An incredible safari experience is your chance to witness these incredible creatures, as nature intended, free in their own habitat. With a trip to South Africa, you'll get the opportunity to see all of the Big Five: African Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, African Lion and the African Leopard. Committed to sustainability and responsible tourism, the Kariega Game Reserve has been successful in re-introducing game and rehabilitating farm lands to their original vegetation to help preserve the area.

Asian Elephant - Krabi, Thailand

One of the symbols of South East Asia, the Elephant suffered tremendously from the logging industry once rife in Thailand, where they were used to destroy the forests they called home. This meant that the population of Asian Elephants declined greatly, to concerning numbers. Projects such as those set up by Elephant Hills not only provide an income for the elephants and Mahouts (their handlers), but they also help prevent these creatures from being mistreated and exploited as can happen in certain cases. Instead of the unnatural, touristy offerings of other places, Elephant Hills offers a more unique and elephant-friendly experience. Get up close and personal with these majestic creatures and see them enjoy a mud bath before helping to scrub them clean and feeding them one of their daily meals. A treat for all!

Then it's onto Sepilok Sanctuary to see the feeding of Orang Utan where you truly appreciate the work that goes into supporting these beautiful creatures.
