Viator, a San Francisco-based travel company, has announced the launch of a new Game of Thrones-themed tour to appeal to fans flying to Croatia for their holidays. The new tour has been launched following a surge in tourism to the country after the new series of the hit TV show aired last month.
Croatia is one of the main filming locations for the popular television programme, with the city of Dubrovnik serving as the official setting of the "King’s Landing". The three-hour tour of the Croatian city includes visits to the ancient city wall, where many of the battle scenes were filmed, and the 11th century Lovrijenac Fortress, which served as the location for the "Battle of the Blackwater" in the show.
The tour operator is also offering Game of Thrones-themed tours in Northern Ireland, one of the filming locations of the television programme. The Belfast tours are much longer than the Croatian ones, lasting a total of 9 hours. Visitors on the tour will visit many of the filming locations including the caves where an evil shadow-baby assassin was born, and Ballycastle, the setting for the "Free Cities".
"Movie and TV-themed tours have always been popular on Viator.com -- Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Sex and the City, to name a few,” said Kate Sullivan, spokesperson for Viator. "Given the popularity of Game of Thrones, not to mention the amazing backdrops provided by the shows' filming locations, we knew these would be very well received."
