Location

Perfectly positioned at the start of the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island is listed by Unesco because of its stunning natural environment. Not only is it the largest sand island in the world – with 250km of superb sandy beaches – it also features untamed tropical rainforest and freshwater lakes. The Mercure resort sits just back from the strait that divides it from the mainland, and is a four-hour drive or one-hour flight from Brisbane.

Rooms

Perfect for those seeking either a romantic getaway or an adventurous escape, the Mercure is built into the bush facing across a peaceful lake. The 152 comfortable rooms all have views of the lake or bush, and an uncluttered design with bright, warm colours. All come with air-conditioning and large private balconies with sliding doors that create a feeling of space while connecting you directly to the unique feel of the island. Superior rooms even have their own spa baths for a relaxing soak in the evening.

Activities

As you would expect on Fraser Island, there’s plenty to keep you active. In the resort itself, choose between indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, table tennis, snooker and children’s clubs; while nearby the pick of the best beaches are within easy reach. You may want to go kayaking, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling or jet-skiing too. Staff are able to arrange tours and excursions to see the rainforest, lakes and beaches, including 75-Mile Beach, which doubles as a highway and an airstrip.

Dining

Enjoy the indoor and outdoor settings of Maheno, a casual restaurant that features live entertainment and cocktails alongside delicious brasserie fare. Signature dining offering Seabelle has a wonderful outdoor bush setting that forms a fantastic backdrop for enjoying specially crafted Australian menus that draw on local cooking from the indigenous Butchulla tribe. You can also dine or drink in several smaller venues around the resort, including Coffee Rock Cafe, which features baguettes, ice creams and coffees in the heart of the shopping village.
