Peru is one of the world's truly great tourist destinations and on this seven day tour you will see so many of the highlights. Beginning and ending in the capital city Lima, you will fly over the spectacular Andes to see all the impressive sights in ancient Cusco. Then its on to the Sacred Valley and up to one of the wonders of the world, stunning Machu Picchu, which sits above a cloud forest. This tour makes a great add on to any longer holiday in this fascinating South American country and will leave you with so many lasting memories.
On arrival at the International airport in Lima you will be welcomed by one of our tour representatives and escorted to your hotel, where you will be briefed on all of your travels during your stay in Peru. The more affluent districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro, which are on the coast, offer good nightlife and cafes all within walking distance. Limenos (Lima's residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants - seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known.
After breakfast you will be picked up at your hotel and taken back to Lima airport for your domestic flight over the Andes to Cusco. On arrival you will be met and taken to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. You will have the remainder of the day at your leisure to rest and allow your body to acclimatise to the high altitude. Later go out and explore on your own and try one of the colourful local restaurants.
Today you travel with a local guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colourful artisan market. The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. The town and fortress here are strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River Valley. This major ruin site is the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. Spend the night in the Sacred Valley, before heading out next day to Machu Picchu.
Today you take the beautiful Hiram Bingham or Vistadome rain train from Ollanta to Machu Picchu that winds through the spectacular Urubamba Valley to the end of the line - the village of Aguas Calientes, a frontier town nestled in the hills beneath Machu Picchu. Here you can relax in the natural mountain hot baths that gave the town its name. This afternoon you join a guided tour at the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu that are just a short drive from the small town. After your guided tour of the ruins, the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore on your own until sunset. Transport is provided to the base of the mountain, where you can return to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.
Rise early today to take advantage of viewing Machu Picchu in the early morning light. This is the best time to see the 'Lost City of the Incas'. If you don't mind the uphill hike, you can climb to Wayna Picchu, which requires approximately four hours to complete, and allows for spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas from above. In the afternoon you take the Spectacular Hiram Bingham train to Cusco where you are met and taken to your hotel. Tonight try an evening dining inside the Pre Columbian Art Museum, considered to be one of the top private collections in all of Peru.
Your guided tour of Cusco and the archaeological sites will begin in the afternoon with a visit to the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cusco, followed by a visit to the Temple of the Sun - the Korikancha. From here you will be led to the outskirts of the city for a tour of the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara, Qenqo, and Tambomachay. Cuzco is considered the mecca of Peru and rightly so. This beautiful colonial town offers much to the visitor with its nearby ruins, cobble-stoned streets, museums, churches and lively atmosphere.
After breakfast today you will be picked up at your hotel in Cusco and taken to the airport for your flight back over the Andes to Lima. A guide will be waiting for you at Lima airport to assist you with your connecting flight or to take you back into the city where you can extend your stay or take one of many other tours, perhaps spending a night or two in the Amazon rainforest. This short highlights tour is a great introduction to Peru and will leave you with a lifetime of memories.
