This five-day tour takes in the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor, as well as giving you the chance to explore Phnom Penh and learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating country. Accommodation throughout is in five-star luxury hotels, so this is the perfect choice for anyone wanting to explore the country in grand style.
Your tour begins as you arrive in Phnom Penh, to be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Here you'll have a chance to freshen up before tonight's welcome drinks and briefing with your tour leader and the rest of your group.
You'll start today with a cyclo (cycle rickshaw) tour of the city. You'll take in the Royal Palace and the famous Silver Pagoda, its floor tiled with 5,000 silver tablets. Built in 1892, the Silver Pagoda houses an Emerald Buddha, as well as a Golden Buddha encrusted with more than 9,000 diamonds. Afterwards, you'll stroll to the National Museum to learn more about Khmer history and art, before visiting the chilling Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crimes and The Killing Fields of Choeng Ek for an insight into the horrors of the Pol Pot era. Finally, you'll visit Psah Thmei, or Central Market. This evening you're at leisure to shop, explore the old colonial buildings near Wat Phnom or wander along the waterfront area
This morning you'll transfer to the airport for your short flight to Siem Reap, where you'll have the afternoon at leisure to relax by the hotel pool, enjoy some pampering or pick up some souvenirs at the boutique craft shops. You may like to visit Tonle Sap lake, the world's second-largest freshwater lake, or try haggling at the local markets.
You'll spend the whole of today exploring the Khmer temples of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built between the ninth and 15th centuries. You'll leave the hotel before dawn, boarding a tuk-tuk for the short ride to Angkor Wat, and will creep through the forest in darkness, past the longest stretch of bas-relief carvings in the world, before reaching the ancient library pools in time to watch the sun rise. You'll enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast outside the temple before moving on to the west gate of the walled city of Angkor Thom to see the eerie stone heads and evocative bas-reliefs of the Bayon temple and the Terraces of the Elephants and Leper King. After lunch at your hotel, you'll drive to the intricately carved Banteay Srei Temple, widely regarded as the "jewel in the crown" of Angkor temples. Next you'll visit a small local village known for its palm sugar, then head on to Ta Prohm, one of Angkor's most atmospheric temples. Once home to 2,740 monks, Ta Prohm was rediscovered, deep in the jungle, in the 1850s by French explorer Henri Mouhot. This evening you'll enjoy a group farewell dinner.
Your trip comes to an end this morning as you transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
