THE LAKE DISTRICT

Drive from Split through the picturesque landscape of the Dalmatian hinterland and Lika and at about midday arrive in the centre of the Plitvice Lakes, which are considered to be one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world. Sixteen lakes situated in thick forest are connected by 92 waterfalls and cascade down the Korana River forming unique surroundings.

Particular attractions are a few caves and the rich diversity of flora and fauna. The Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park in 1949 and since 1979 have been under UNESCO protection. The tour of the park lasts about two and a half hours and along with walking includes a boat trip on Lake Kozjak. There is free time for lunch and for you to explore on your own.

This canyon is the greatest calcareous travertine barrier in Europe. The lower Krka flows through Prokljansko lake and flows into a 9 km long bay – Sibenik Bay.
