Our favourite place to eat

Stroll down the walkway to a table in tropical gardens lit by burning torches at Ubud's Mozaic Restaurant, run by creative chef Chris Salans. French fusion cuisine is the basis of an ever-changing seasonal menu influenced by Asian favourites, with a choice of four tasting menus - one of which is a simple surprise. Feast on beef tenderloin or yellow-fin tuna accompanied by exotic dressings like kaffir lime and caviar. If you're happy to splash out on fine dining, this is the restaurant for you.

Don’t miss the classic local platter of rijsttafel, but save some space for the black rice pudding and enjoy traditional Balinese dancing twice a week as you sip Champagne or spirits under the stars.

5. Bali Asli

An organic experience

To get a real taste of Balinese culture and cuisine, make the two-hour trip from the airport to spend a day at Bali Asli. Turn up and dine on Nasi Campur platters, fresh fish and unusual snakeskin fruit or, for more of an experience than a meal, take part in cooking classes based on 'a day in the life…', involving fishing and farming for your food in the local area, before heading back to cook it on wood-fired, mud-brick stoves in true Balinese tradition.
