5 hottest bars in Shanghai

Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark

On a high

1. Cloud 9

On a high

Our all-time favourite bar

Get over your vertigo and spend an evening in the highest bar in the world, the aptly named Cloud 9. Set on the 87th floor of the super-sleek Grand Hyatt (the tallest hotel in the world), it serves up 360-degree views of the city below accompanied by long cocktails named after the stars. Sip at your leisure, stir up some romance and take in the splendour of Shanghai, or head one floor up to the deck on the hideaway mezzanine. Mesmerising.

Going underground

2. Salon de Ning

Going underground

From the clouds to the ground - tucked in the basement of the luxe Peninsula Shanghai Hotel, Salon de Ning is a uniquely decorated clubby lounge and bar that blends travel mementoes and objets d’art with the decadence of 1930s Shanghai. Rich fabrics, red leather and animal prints adorn the bar and four separate, themed rooms. The must-see area is the upside-down room, with a fireplace and bookcases set in the ceiling. Expect a young crowd sipping cool cocktails and the treat of a fantastic live band.

Class in a glass

3. The Glamour Bar

Class in a glass

Head over to The Bund for two of Shanghai’s coolest bars in one. We love the art deco-style of the ultra-chic Glamour Bar with its sunken lounge area and silver columns, but it’s the creative cocktails that really steal the show, including the signature Glamour concoction. There’s also a separate Wine Bar (with 32 varieties by the glass) and a Champagne Bar (with five types). The adjoining M On The Bund is the more established cocktail bar and also serves a menu of modern European dishes.

Wonders of the deep

4. Aquarium

Wonders of the deep

No prizes for guessing the main attraction at this bar! Dominated by a wall-to-wall, sea-water fish tank as well as a stunning ceiling display, Aquarium is a stylish Japanese bar (and restaurant) with a decadent feel. Curl up on a comfy bed by the window or ensconce yourself in a leather sofa in full view of the fish. A selection of sake is among the special drinks at this romantic retreat ideal for after-dinner drinks.

Sleek sounds in a skyscraper

5. M1NT

Sleek sounds in a skyscraper

A super-chic lounge, club and restaurant in one, M1nt caters to your every mood. Luxuriate beside shark tanks and sip organic cocktails, relax in the lounge area or take in the views from the terrace. Music is a mix of commercial and funky house and draws in a local as well as foreign crowd, from young people on the dance floor to more mature guests at the tables. One of Shanghai’s most sophisticated venues, it’s a great location just for drinking, as well as dancing and dining.
