Chile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America and on this week long self drive tour you will get to know the south of the country where lakes and snow covered volcanoes await. And along the way you can relax at hot springs. The tour begins in Temuco and ends in Puerto Montt and you will visit highlights including Pucon, Huilo Huilo and Puerto Varas.
You arrive at the airport in Temuco in the morning and begin your Chile adventure by heading towards Pucon, which is around 80 miles away. This lovely town sits on the shore of Villarrica Lake. Here you should visit the volcanic caves which are the only ones open to the public in the world. Inside you can see the geologic constitution of these tunnels formed after several eruptions of Villarrica Volcano.
Today you drive to Pucon along the way stopping to visit Huerquehue National Park, where it’s possible to see three lagoons at different levels. It’s a moderate trek to get to the lagoons and suitable for all members of the family. Another option today is is going around Villarrica volcano, or if you are feeling energetic, a climb to the top to get spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
In the morning drive the 80 miles to the Geometric Hot springs. This complex owes its name to 17 thermal pools of geometric shapes, were the water temperatures range between 39ºC and 40ºC. Then visit Huife hot springs where you will stay tonight. These springs are located by the shore area of the Licura river. The complex here offers lymphatic drainage and reflexology massages, so prepare to enter a state of deep relaxation, surrounded by lush nature at its best.
After breakfast today you leave Huife hot springs and take the road to Panguipulli. After a long and spectacular drive of around 150 miles you arrive at Montana Magica Lodge which is located within Huilo Huilo Reserve. During your stay here you can experience life in this huge native forest, with its beautiful lagoons, cascading waterfalls, hot springs and a volcano.
A free day today to relax and fully appreciate the charms of Huilo Huilo and the lodge. It’s possible to take full day of half day excursion or explore on your own. The water here boasts great purity and the forest is magical. The Montana lodge was built with quality material by craftsmen from the surrounding communities. There is a playroom for children, mini golf, a reading room, restaurant and bar, a sauna and even tubs in ancient trunks with naturally heated water.
Today you safe farewell to the lodge and drive from Huilo Huilo to Puerto Varas, a journey of around 250 miles. Before arriving at Puerto Varas, visit the beautiful city of Frutillar, which is located on the edge of Llanquihue Lake. You should also stop and visit Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, where you can get close to the stunning Saltos del Petrohué and Osorno Volcanoes.
This morning is free for you to walk around Puerto Varas, famous for its rose bushes and streets that end at its magical waterfront, which is lively both during the day and at night. In addition to its beaches and bathing resorts other interesting attractions lie a few miles away. One of them is the Petrohue River and Lake Todos los Santos, where river rafting, zip-lining, salmon fishing and hiking are on offer. Later the tour comes to an end when you return your car at the airport of Puerto Montt and catch an onward flight or begin your journey home.
