Iceland has much to offer in winter. As its name suggests, ice carved the rock thrown up by the force of volcanoes, and this tour combines the best known sights of Iceland's 'Golden Circle' with a journey east, along the coast to access wonders such as the Glacial Lagoon at Jokulsarlon and a gentle walk on one of the vast glaciers. You then complement these natural wonders with an insight into modern day Iceland at a geothermal plant and a glimpse of the country's past with turf houses and fascinating folk museums.
On arrival you will be met by one of out tour representatives and your adventure will begin right away. Start with a visit to Keflavik before spending a relaxing afternoon at the soothing, surreal and otherworldly waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. Then it's back to your hotel in the capital city of Reykjavik where, after checking in, you have the chance to go out and explore on your own, try some of the local cuisine at a nearby restaurant and sample the buzzing nightlife.
Leave the capital city after breakfast this morning and set off east, taking in Seljalandsfoss and the stunning Skogarfoss waterfalls. Later stop at the impressive visitor centre at Thorvaldseyri farm, below Eyafjallajokull, then continue your journey past the town of Vik to the sea stacks at Reynisdra. Lots to see along the way and your expert tour guide will point out all the places of interest and keep you informed and entertained with stories and local legends.
Today you are taken to visit Skaftafell and enjoy an easy glacier walk on Svinafellsjokull or Solheimajokull Glacier. These are the biggest glaciers outside the polar regions and Skaftafell is the gateway to the largest national park in Europe - Vatnajokull. If you are looking for breathtaking views, great hiking and unforgettable glacier trips, this is certainly the country's top location. All the outlet glaciers descend from the main plateau and all are a unique shape and size.
More memorable adventures today when you drive to Jokulsarlon, the glacial lagoon which in winter is always filled with mesmerising icebergs. Here you can walk down to the coast to enjoy the beached icebergs and see the dramatic ice formations. In the afternoon, after lunch, there is a possible treat in store when, weather permitting, you are taken to explore the inside of an ice cave. Make sure you wrap up warm today!
One of the highlights of the tour today when you are taken to see the waterfalls at Gullfoss, which translates as the Golden Falls and is one of Icelands most popular waterfalls and a major tourist attraction on the Golden Circle Route. These falls feature on the world's top 10 waterfalls list. After spending time here seeing and photographing this natural wonder in all its winter splendour, you travel on to Geysir where you see the stunning rift valley at Thingvellir.
Another fascinating day today when you take a tour of the Hellisheidarvirkjun geothermal heating plant which is nestled below the mountains. Travel into the Blue Mountains and then it's an easy walk past lava flows to a dormant crater. Located on Hengill volcano in the south of the country, Hellisheidarvirkjun heat and power plant constitutes the biggest power station in Iceland and the second largest in the world. It provides the electricity for the whole of Reykjavik and you will hear all the interesting facts on the tour.
Today is free for you to explore the capital city or take one of many exciting excursions such as snowmobiling or hiking. With a population of only 120,000, the world's most northerly capital city combines colourful buildings, quirky creative people, eye popping design and a surprisingly wild night life. It is loaded with excellent museums, captivating art, rich culinary choices and funky cafes and bars and with a backdrop of snow capped mountains, churning seas and crystal clear air you are sure to fall in love with the place.
Today your wonderful tour around Iceland comes to an end. But before you leave there is a morning visit to the spectacular Leidarendi lava tube cave. Then it's back to the city where you may have time for some more sightseeing or shopping before heading to the airport to catch your flight home. Iceland is always a rewarding country to visit, and on this winter tour you will see all the southern highlights.
