Queensland City, Reef & Beyond

Description

This 14-day self-drive tour is a great way to explore Queensland's cities and reefs at your own pace. Starting off in Cairns, you'll take in glorious beaches, lush rainforests and sugarcane plantations and Fraser Island, renowned for its beauty, before arriving in Brisbane.

Day 1
Cairns to Cape Tribulation or Mossman

You'll start your road trip by travelling north along the Captain Cook Highway towards Cape Tribulation, stopping for lunch at the picturesque town of Palm Cove, then continuing to catch the vehicle ferry across the Daintree River. In Mossman, you'll join the Dreamtime Gorge Walk, a hiking tour through the Curtain Figs, and hear stories from the Dreamtime.

Day 2
Cape Tribulation or Mossman to Port Douglas

Today you'll head back to the beautiful tropical town of Port Douglas, where you'll have time to relax and enjoy a cold drink by the pool or at one of the local bars.

Day 3
Port Douglas

You have the whole day at leisure today in Port Douglas. You might like to take a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef, or stay in town to explore and pick up some souvenirs.

Day 4
Port Douglas to Mission Beach

You'll leave Port Douglas this morning, heading south along the Bruce Highway. You'll pass though the sugarcane farming town of Innisfail, and may like to stop at Paronella Park for morning tea. You can also explore the romantic 1930s Spanish Castle and its beautiful gardens, before continuing to Mission Beach, where the rainforest meets the sea. Take a stroll along the golden sands and cool off with a swim before watching the sunset with a cocktail or two.

Day 5
Mission Beach

You're at leisure today to relax on the beach, visit the markets, or take a drive out to Paronella Park, a beautiful semi-ruined Spanish Castle nestled in five hectares of lush gardens, next to a waterfall.

Day 6
Mission Beach to Townsville

Today you'll continue following the picturesque Queensland coastline, through the towns of Ingham, known as "little Italy", and Cardwell, to Townsville, a modern city and the administrative capital of North Queensland. While you're here, don't miss the chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland, home to the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. This evening, join the locals in a walk along the waterfront esplanade known as The Strand.

Day 7
Townsville to Airlie Beach

This morning you'll continue south from Townsville along the Bruce Highway, passing through the twin towns of Ayr and Home Hill. You'll take a detour through Bowen, before arriving in Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. Airlie Beach is one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations and gateway to the 74 islands of the Whitsundays.

Day 8
Airlie Beach

You're at leisure today, and may like to take a sailing trip and spend the day on one of the many spectacular Whitsunday Islands.

Day 9
Airlie Beach to Barmoya

This morning you'll leave Airlie Beach and drive back to Proserpine to join the highway. You'll then continue your journey south towards Marlborough, before arriving at Henderson Park Farm for a true Aussie cattle farm experience.

Day 10
Barmoya to Agnes Waters

Today you'll travel along the Bruce Highway through Rockhampton, which marks the exact line of the Tropic of Capricorn. Enjoy the picturesque scenes of lush cane fields as you arrive in the quaint Agnes Waters town of 1770, where you can relax and take a stroll along the beach.

Day 11
Agnes Waters to Fraser Island

Today you'll travel along the Isis Highway to River Heads, the departure point for Fraser Island, via the historic town of Bundaberg, home of Bundaberg Rum. From River Heads you will board the Kingfisher Bay Catamaran for stunning Fraser Island.

Day 12
Fraser Island

World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, and today you have the whole day at leisure to explore. If you're travelling between August and Marrch, don't miss the chance to join a whale watching tour.

Day 13
Fraser Island to Noosa

After this morning's catamaran transfer back to River Heads you have an easy drive to the relaxed beach town of Noosa. Here you can take time to walk along the beautiful beach and stop at one of the cafes for lunch before exploring the local shops.

Day 14
Noosa to Brisbane

Your last day of driving takes you to Brisbane along the M1. This is a short drive, so there's plenty of time to stop at the Australia Zoo along the way. In Brisbane, you'll drop your car off at the airport, ready for your onward journey.

RCL must have the highest priced excursions and drinks/meals packages of any company in the cruise market and Radiance of the Seas is looking extremely tired!

We were disappointed that on our return flights we couldn't get adjacent seats despite having booked our holiday in March. We would welcome your comment about this.

Business Class Cathay was an excellent recommendation. It was also one of very few flights departing Hong Kong when the typhoon threatened on the 21st October. What luck! Thank you for such an efficient way of handling bookings.

Would not recommend flying with Silkair. Singapore Airlines fine but they use Silkair (a subsidiary ) for Cairns to Singapore. Food was rubbish and their idea of vegetarian is a few sticks of celery , two tomatoes and loads of lettuce! Sorry to whinge but DialAFlight are great and I know you appreciate honest feedback.
