Wine & Wilderness Tour

Description

On this five day tour that begins and ends in Adelaide you can raise a glass or two to the wonders of Aussie wine and when you are not sampling the Down Under vintages have the chance to explore a beautiful wilderness region, the Flinders Ranges. You will visit some of the country’s top wineries sampling wine from famous names such as Jacob’s Creek and Wolf Blass and boutique specialists during your week long self drive itinerary. Take in charming and historic towns, national parks and travel past mountain ranges in beautiful remote areas. Continuing on your journey you will visit the Flinders Ranges, home to the magnificent natural amphitheatre, Wilpena Pound, a region known for being one of the oldest landscapes on earth. Bursting with stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and Aboriginal legend – you won’t fail to be impressed! This tour is tailor made for lovers of good wine wanting to escape to some of the most rugged and inspiring scenery Australia has to offer!

Day 1
Adelaide to Barossa

Pick up your rental vehicle at the airport or in downtown Adelaide and travel north to the Barossa Valley. Take the picturesque route through the Adelaide Hills, via Chain of Ponds and Kersbrook to the pretty hamlet of Williamstown then continue on to Lyndoch, after which there is an endless choice of attractions and wineries. This afternoon continue exploring the wineries of the region, perhaps visiting those near the town of Nuriootpa , such as Elderton Wines, Penfolds Wines and the striking contemporary setting of Wolf Blass Visitor Centre. Overnight at Tanunda in the heart of the Barossa region

Day 2
Barossa to Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges

Travel to Wilpena via Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. It has a beautiful setting at the foot of Mount Remarkable and is surrounded by national park. Melrose is a charming reminder of early South Australia and many of its features are within walking distance. Climb to the War Memorial for a panoramic view over the Willochra Plain and visit Cathedral Rock, which is a spectacular formation along the edge of Mount Remarkable Creek. Travel on to Quorn, one of Australia’s most historic railway towns then continue to Wilpena Pound for overnight.

Day 3
Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges

Spend today exploring the area either by walking trail or a guided four wheel drive tour, keeping an eye out for native animals and wildflowers. Scenic flights are also available and are a great way to truly appreciate the grandeur of this dramatic landscape. Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre - a huge flat plain covered in scrubland trees and totally surrounded by jagged hills which form a rim. From the ground it looks like a rugged low mountain range which can easily be traversed.

Day 4
Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges to Clare Valley

This morning, head south to arrive at the Clare Valley. Visit the heritage-listed village of Mintaro and enjoy a walk around the remarkable buildings. Clare Valley is internationally known for its cool climate wines. While a few of the larger wineries have a base here, Clare Valley is known for its boutique wineries whose cellar doors are generally located in close proximity to each other along the Main North Road. Take the opportunity to sample the area's fine wines at one of dozens of cellars.

Day 5
Clare Valley to Adelaide

There is plenty of time this morning to discover more about the Clare Valley. Perhaps take the Riesling Trail which runs for 20 miles along the old Riverton to Spalding railway line between the towns of Clare and Auburn. It's suitable for recreational walkers and mountain and touring bikes. Named after the grape and wine variety that the region is famous for, the Riesling Trail travels past many cellars and other visitor attractions. At the end of the day return your vehicle to Adelaide (Glenelg) where the tour ends.

Not your fault but the service in Doha for wheelchair assistance was poor. The flight was delayed by 2 hours and the previous flight was an hour early which left me stuck in a corner for over 5 hopurs with no chance of a drink!
