It's not unusual for visitors to Thailand to spend most or all of their holiday relaxing at one of the many beautiful beach resorts that have made the country so popular. But there is so much to see and do at this exotic destination and this five day tour of the stunning Golden Triangle area, which can be combined with a stay in the capital Bangkok, really gives you a genuine feel for life in south east Asia.
On arrival in Thailand you can spend some time exploring the bustling capital city of Bangkok before catching a train or a short flight north to Chiang Mai where you will be met by one of our tour representatives and taken to your hotel. Relax after the journey then go out and discover some of the delights of this beautiful region of the country, shop for souvenirs and meet the friendly local people. Tonight either eat at your hotel or in one of the many local restaurants and sample the local cooking.
Today visit the White Meo Hilltribe and Doi Suthep Temple. Drive past Chiang Mai University and zoo and up to the hilltribe village. This is followed by a stop at the temple, the most sacred one in the North which is reached by a 306 step staircase or cable car. Panoramic views of the Chiang Mai valley are spectacular. After lunch see the handicrafts at Sankamphaeng then continue to Bor Sang, the umbrella village where delicate Thai paper umbrellas are produced. Later visit a ceramics factory and see lacquerware and silver craftsmen.
After an early breakfast at your hotel today you are taken to an orchid farm to see the beautiful blooms for which Thailand is famous. Next stop is the Chiang Dao Elephant Camp where you will learn all about the animals and have the chance to go for a ride on one of these gentle giants. Continue driving via Fang to Thaton stopping for lunch along the way at a small resort and at Fang market. Then you continue your drive to Baan Thaton to spend the night at a riverside resort with dinner at the hotel.
Today you take a tour into the mountains to Doi Mae Salong, a Chinese Kuomintang town and then down to Mae Sai at the Thai-Burma border where you have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon drive to Chiang Saen and take an exhilarating boat trip on the mighty Mekong River by speedboat to the beautiful Golden Triangle area where the borders of three countries - Thailand, Burma and Laos - meet. Return to Chiang Rai later and have dinner at local restaurant.
On this your final full day of the tour you may have more time for sightseeing or shopping for local souvenirs before being driven to the airport or train station to continue your Thai holiday. Now may be a good time to head for one of the country's golden beaches to chill out, or you could travel to Bangkok and see some of the famous sights in this great city.
