Luang Prabang Explorer

Description

A land of Lotus eaters amid the bloated development of its neighbours, the mysterious country of Laos brings together the best of south east Asia in one bite-sized destination. The country retains much of the tradition that has vanished in a frenzy of bulldozers elsewhere in the region as you will discover on this great five day exploration of magical Luang Prabang, where you will still see hundreds of saffron-robed monks gliding through the streets in search of alms.

Day 1
Arrive Luang Prabang

On arrival at the capital city Vientiane, you will be met at the airport and driven to your hotel in Luang Prabang. Once there a friendly ‘meet and greet’ representative will answer any questions you might have on how to get around, what to do, current local events, how much things cost, where to go for shopping and your favourite foods, as well as helping to arrange anything extra you may need. The rest of the day and evening is free for you to explore on your own seeing some of the sights.

Day 2
Luang Prabang

There are lots of things to see and do today. You can visit temples, palaces and colonial architecture on a walking tour, stop at the Arts and Ethnology Centre or watch a monk blessing ceremony. Food ideas include making jaew bong, your own sugar-cane juice, a Kopiak soup meal or a Lao local snack sampling. Arts and crafts lovers can visit a blacksmith village or a silk weaving centre or watch Lao potters at work. Alternatively you can go for a forest walk on the other side of the Mekong and later play petanque with the locals.

Day 3
Luang Prabang

Today, during a cooking class and over a 'bamboo weaving' exercise, you will learn about the importance of the bamboo plant to Lao culture. Begin with a tuk tuk pick-up from your hotel and head to The Bamboo Experience, a rustic pavillion in a picturesque setting on the outskirts of town. After a warm welcome you can try your hand at weaving a souvenir mat made from strips of bamboo. Then enjoy a cooking class before relaxing on a terrace to savour your culinary creations. There's also time to learn some fun Laotian games.

Day 4
Luang Prabang

Leave your hotel today for the private car journey to Kuang Si Falls, the most beautiful and famous waterfalls in Laos. On the way, stop at Phou Si market for an introduction to the colourful fruits and vegetables which make up the tasty regional diet. Then stop at the riverside setting of the Ock Pop Tok weaving centre. When you reach Kuang Si falls you can swim in the turquoise waters, or simply explore the beautiful surroundings. Next visit a nearby sanctuary which cares for and rehabilitates Asian Black Bears rescued from animal traders.

Day 5
Depart Luang Prabang

Today your short but exciting discovery tour of beautiful Luang Prabang comes to an end. But before you are picked up from your hotel and driven to the airport to catch an onward flight or begin your journey home, make some time for last minute shopping or sightseeing. This five day explorer tour, which can be added to any longer holiday in south east Asia, is a great way to get to know one of the most amazing areas of mysterious Laos and will leave you with so many wonderful memories.

Thai Airlines overall good but they did not have any food options for me on the way out so I was unable to have dinner. In future I will book vegetarian if I go with them. On the way back - my seat was broken and could not recline which was unpleasant for 13 hours in economy. Isla was superb. Very helpful and I will use her again. Brilliant girl.
